Great stories, but the constant music in background
I’m noticing on the last few episodes the music is quite distracting and I thought it would only be when the story was making a point but the last episode has had it throughout. Since it’s over an hour decided not to finish. Sorry just my opinion. Thanks.

    A Love Letter to Humanity
From the very moment i heard the 1st episode i could tell i had found a kindred spirit. Someone who also looked at shining moments on our long journey here and felt awe, respect, and wonder. The Speaker clearly resonates with the very real people that he explores and sees them for what they are, good or bad, GIANTS. Monolyths of the human story and our species' most infamous children. Their stories show us the enourmous lengths we can go to, the Invictus Anima of our ancestors, and that no matter how vast the gap of time between us, we are all of one blood. We are Human Beings and this podcast is our love letter to ourselves. Cannot recommend enough!

    World Class
Discovered the show in searching for a history/overview of Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project when I happened upon the Historium: Atomic Dawn series...wow! The writing is phenomenal, they managed to fit such a great breadth of material, created a really engaging story arc and knocked it out of the park. So impressed...and also so personally enriched by their work. Thank you!! Also great in citing their marvelous sources, a few of which I plan to pick-up including the book about the heavy water production site sabotage...should be a movie. Thank you SO much for what is clearly a labor of love, and investing heart and soul!!!

    absolute banger of a show
incredible depth and breadth of topics, and really compelling narration. so many of these stories have the drama and intensity of like an hbo miniseries.

    A+
Historium is the exact history podcast I want to exist in the world. Well written, gripping, fun, interesting and read with the perfect tone and cadence. Loved the Andean Gambit and the first episode of Atomic Dawn is excellent so far. Can’t wait for more!

    Excellent!!
I just love this podcast!!! The speaker is eloquent but relatable. The content is so interesting and entertaining at the same time. Highly recommend!

    Mark Chrysler Light
Love this podcast. #TheConstant, but more zen. Jake’s voice is reminiscent of Mark Chrysler, but the chill history teacher, not the angry one.

    Best Podcast You’ll Ever Find
Probably my favorite podcast. Jake combines a gripping narrative style with extensive research on topics ranging from the famous to the obscure. Brings a human dimension to history like hardly any other resources on history do. I have both teared up and laughed many a time while listening. 100/10 would recommend. Hope he continues to dish out episodes for years to come!

    Simply one of the best
From the audio to the music to the finely researched stories, Historium is one of the best podcasts. I’ve been listening for years now and I get so excited when I see that Jake has posted a new episode.

    Stumbled upon
I happened to hear this podcast mentioned on another podcast and decided to check it out. It’s really good!

    The Andean Gambit!
It was a fantastic episode! The pace and details kept my imagination going. Wonderfully told!
  • Snow Biscuit
    The latest episode...wow!
“The Andean Gambit” is phenomenal! Often my mind wanders during podcasts (because I listen while doing other things), but even though this episode is long and intricate, Jake held my interest throughout. Such a terribly tragic tale, though - hold off on this episode if you’re feeling down.

    Best history podcast
This is my favorite history podcast. The script and narrating is amazing. Unlike other history podcasts that focus on numbers and dates, Jake puts you in the middle of the story and gets you invested in the characters. He provides multiple perspective that you even feel bad for the bad guys. Wish history was taught this way in schools. I have gone back and listened to every single episodes!

    Big mistake
In episode 16 he says Rutherford B. Hayes when he means Ernest Rutherford. Needs a competent Jeopardy player to fact check him.

    Refreshingly Interesting Historical Podcast
This podcast is awesome. The episodes are not lectures or someone’s doctoral thesis. Perfect in length and fascinating topics. My only criticism is to be careful when describing early European explorers visiting North America as “discovering” something brand new. It’s hard to “discover” a place that’s already inhabited. Otherwise keep up the good work and the good story-telling. Thank-you!

    Just WOW
These are some of the most interesting and well thought out topics I’ve ever heard! The narrator is well spoken and very professional! The topics are fresh and not worn out on every other podcast(can’t wait to listen to the DnD podcast with the hubs) there is also no mention of politics and personal views which is refreshing!!! I hope there are so many more to come!

    Just discovered this podcast
I’m not a history buff, but this podcast is so interesting, so well-done that I’m hooked after three episodes. I highly recommend for those who love well-produced podcasts on any subject.

    Fabulous!
Quirky history at its’ best! Even if you hated history class, you’ll enjoy these bits of lessor known moments in time. Great story telling

This podcast is really, REALLY good.
  • youngking707
    Wow
Words can’t explain how amazing this podcast is I used to think history was morning and now I can’t imagine history being anything less then amazing. The only sad part is that I finished every episode in about a week but then I re listen to everything and it sounds just as amazing as the first time . 10/10

    Harlem Hellfighters
Great podcast, great story, but Spartanburg is in South Carolina, not North. Otherwise, well done.
  • A Novel by Coronavirus
    Almost perfect.
Great writing, editing, and pacing. Fantastic story-telling approach to history. The host sounds like a domestic dispute between a cat and a clarinet, but the content is good enough to fight through it.
  • kbax90
    Love it
Learning lots of history I didn't know, and having fun doing it. The host is funny and creative. Very well presented.
  • ickess
    Great great great!
I listen to mostly historical podcasts. But the storytelling style of this one is so smooth, with an unbiased presentation of interesting topics, that it keeps me captivated. I’ve listened to every one, they’re all just great great great!

    Great Show!
Worth listening too. It's very detailed and is presented well.

    Making history accessible and enjoyable!
I did not much care for history when I was younger, classes made the material seem so dry and boring. This show has changed my mind about history and presents it in bite sized episodes, easily digestible and enjoyable to listen to. Thank you!!
  • JeepersGirl
    Interesting and informative!
I was a horrible history student when I was young. Jake makes it all come alive. Unbelievable amount of work put into each episode.
  • Lurkinglion
    Amazing podcast
Phenomenal job taking a historical event and placing you in a narrative. The storytelling is heightened by the music. Can’t stop listening!

    Fantastic
If you love history, or even just slightly interested, this is the podcast you should listen to. The way Jake places you in the shoes of someone thousands of years ago, good or bad, makes you feel like you’re living in that exact moment. This podcast will really open your eyes to both sides of history and help you understand the people living these scenarios. I’m absolutely hooked and have listened to almost all available episodes in about 2 weeks. Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to see what else is in store! P.s. So far I think my favorite episode has to be the WW1 Christmas episode. Something so sweet and human in such a terrible time and place. The Amistad is a close second though. Gotta love unexpected justice.

    The sky isn’t blue!!!
I loved episode #28 New Blue. Is it possible that early humans couldn’t see the color blue? What a strange concept. This is no normal history podcast. It’ll teach you so many things you’d never cover in your 12 week college history class!
  • nikki8884
    Good stories told too quickly
Love the historical facts and fun story telling. However, in my opinion the story teller speaks to quickly. Usually I am on the bus or driving from work, or even laying in bed, while listening, so speaking a little more slowly is preferable for me. Otherwise good information and interesting
  • BmoreJDH
    Give it one episode...
and you’ll be hooked. Jake masterfully weaves a story in such a way that you are transported to the time for when the topic takes place. I can’t remember how I stumbled onto this podcast but I’m glad I did. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite podcasts.

    Excellent show!
I’ve liked this show for awhile, a concise and entertaining narrative on a lot of obscure historical events and themes. Savagely underrated. Inspired me to do my own podcast even! If you like narrative history and good old fashioned story telling, you’ve downloaded the right podcast!
  • Onora432578
    Incredible!
The storytelling is second to none, and the topics are incredibly gripping. I find myself reacting so emotionally to almost every show. My favorite episode is definitely the one on the color blue. As a scientist and artist who studies the pigments and painting techniques of ancient middle eastern art, this episode really resonated with me. I can’t wait to listen to more!

A true diamond in the rough
Jake has a fantastic grasp of his topics, and tells incredibly interesting stories.

    Good
High-quality podcast. Unfortunately, politics and bias make their way in occasionally.
  • Jarshush
    Very impressive!
This podcast has it all! Wonderful music, a narrator with a very impressive voice and fabulous content. Many of the stories presented are unusual and the research and writing are some of the best in the podcast universe. I’m so happy I stumbled on this site!

    Jake Barton...
...has a way with words. Harlem Hellfire made my eyes well up a couple times. The subject material is interesting but the writing and delivery are what makes this podcast awesome!
  • tsar1900
    Outstanding
Love this podcast, a real stand out.
  • chvck_flyer
    Excellently Written and Performed
I listen to tons of podcasts, but this one stands out. I love the way this podcast takes historical events and brings them to life, as if they’re unfolding in front of you. It’s absolutely entertaining and overall just excellent. I’d give it 10 stars if I could.
  • Friendlygamesquid777
    Excruciatingly politically correct...
Subject matter is inherently interesting. Host has a touch of the huckster peeking through. That would fine, if not for desperate adherence to political correctness, even while intoning the same bloodlust-tinged bread & circuses sensationalism of any mainstream outlet to drive a larger audience... dishonest, repulsive, uncool...I say yuck. Lots better podcasts...Dan Carlin, for example
  • Pokeycabra
    Unique vignettes from history
A wide range of thought provoking topics, unique stories, well-researched and narrated. One of my favorite podcasts out there.

    Breathtaking
Jake Barton knows how to punch out serious & entertaining content. Always interested in hearing his perspective on issues and how we can learn from some of the more obscure nooks and crannies of OUR history.
