Very entertaining, love the new incarnation of the podcast.

    Lack of Human empathy
Saying the Romanov children deserved to be killed is… certainly an opinion. Also listened to there Diana episode, and these guys just seem to really not care about mental health at all.

    Amazing hosts
The heathers episodes are very good. The hosts are so good at what they do. Please cover the little shop off broadway revival at westside!

Listened to this show for a while, never gets old. The basic episode formula is so strong that even though it’s basically the same thing every time, it never becomes stale or boring. Andrew has one of my favorite laughs of all time. Please keep it up. On a side note, when I was 15 my parents made me stop listening to this because there was swears. That was sad. It probably fair. Other side note, accidentally wrote this review on my dads Apple Podcasts account so oops. I can’t undo this review. Hope doesn’t care or see this. Bye.

    unfortunate
I have found the hosts to be very insensitive. I was especially disappointed in the Dear Evan Hansen and Rent episodes. If you don't like a show or understand the purpose of it, don't review it. There are so many more musicals out there that you don't need to complain about and can share how important those ones are to YOU! Everyone has a favorite musical and that's the joy to musical theatre, there are SO many shows, you don't have to like them all, but I'm drawing the line at being rude toward fans of the musicals you don't like, especially toward the autistic and mental health community. That's just simply not what the theatre community is about. Do better.

    Love This Podcast!
This Podcast is excellent, and 95% of the time manages to perfectly express what is good (and what isn’t) about the show being covered. An especially good example is The Music Man (2022) episode, with spot on opinions about the changes made, and the casting decisions. While I obviously don’t agree with every single opinion on every show, the commentary given is often presented as their own personal opinions, and not Gospel. You guys keep doing what you’re doing 😊 #benbrantleyisoverparty

    I'm rating this a Manchego...
Because it's my favorite cheese! The podcast is a ton of fun, with great conversations and strong-but-open-to-change opinions. In a recent episode, they even discussed how good a musical is, even if it's not for them. I was impressed. Too often people declare that anything not for them is bad, but Jess, Andrew, and Liz are open-minded and willing to discuss the positives of things even when it's not their cup of tea. The discord has great people talking about great shows, and is a very welcoming community. Thanks for such a fun time, Jess and Andrew and Liz (and Bree!)

I just found this! I love it.
This helps makes long work days better. So much better.

    Dear Evan Hansen
The DEH episode was offensive. If you’re not autistic, maybe don’t criticize those on the spectrum for identifying with a character in a musical? You don’t get to tell autistic kids or depressed kids that they’re stupid for liking a show just because you didn’t get it. Not everything’s about you.
  • owo V
    Well that happened.
I did not think the previous awful review would be read on a podcast. Honestly, I am impressed. No things changed. The show is still great. Look forward to seeing what comes next.
  • Katlyn1210
    The Rent episode…
Is just atrocious. Why bother covering a show you don’t like if you’re just going to bash it the entire time? If some of the commentary was more objective it might have at least been an entertaining listen.

    Really fun commentary about musicals
I really enjoy all the episodes, totally loved the High School Musical episodes, too, but I have a big note about the Bye Bye Birdie episode- they keep correcting themselves to say that Rita Moreno was in the original, not Chita Rivera, but it definitely was Chita and not Rita (cue the Forbidden Broadway song)!

    Silly yet informative
This is the only musical podcast I listen to. It’s equal parts caring and irreverent in a way that makes it very approachable to people like me who love the idea of musical theater but mostly just listen to the same cast albums from their childhood with very little being added to the rotation. I’ve been listening for years, and I feel like it’s made me much more fond of musical theater as an art form, plus one of their ads told me about a performance of the secret garden I was able to get tickets to, and I’d literally been wanting to see that show for about 30 years. Cheers guys, and keep up the good work. edit: the hosts read this on their episode and mentioned I gave them four stars. That was user error. I don’t know the Apple Podcasts app very well and didn’t realize I had accidentally docked them a star. This is a five star podcast.

A Fun Listen (with a questionable take)
I really enjoyed listening to a handful of episodes during my commute. However, upon listening to the Anastasia episode I was disappointed to hear you refer to The Nostalgia Critic/Doug Walker as “my man” - yikes - and had to detract a star. We all make mistakes, though, so looking forward to giving you guys another try next episode!

    I Wanted to Like It...
The rapport between the hosts is nice and feels genuine! But I simply can not get past the aggravating lack of research. Let me use the last episode I listened to as an example: Bat Boy. They start off by recounting the plot with multiple errors (ie. Dr. Parker doesn't reveal Bat Boy's parentage, Meredith does. And it doesn't happen in the last scene, it happens 2 scenes earlier). These are basic errors that could be avoided by looking at Wikipedia. The hosts seem to think it's a funny bit to recount the plot of each show from memory, but it's not only frustrating to listen to all the errors, it's disrespectful to the shows being reviewed. The errors often make the shows sound worse than they actally are. Their main critique in the Bat Boy episode is about how the twist in the end is not foreshadowed. Again, this is full of errors. They say Dr. Parker has no reaction to seeing Bat Boy besides disgust. But he has a huge reaction. There's a dramatic music sting, thunder, Parker says "how did you get here" with clear recognition, and then has to chug alcohol from his flask to recover from the shock. The hosts say Meredith and Parker never acknowledge the situation when they're alone, but the first thing Parker says when they're alone is "you know what this is, don't you?" which Meredith acknowledges. My point in nitpicking this episode is that these kinds of mistakes are present across many episodes. The hosts need to give these shows the respect of at least summarizing them accurately and not basing their critiques on faulty memory. In many cases, it seems as though neither of the hosts have watched the show they're speaking about recently, and are just there to goof around.

    One of my Favorite Podcasts!!
I’ve been listening to Musicals with Cheese for around a year now, and I love it!!! It’s such a funny podcast and sometimes I find myself fully laughing out loud while listening😭 Also, being someone who’s completely obsessed with theatre, I’ve tried a bunch of different musical theatre podcasts and none of them measure up to this one in terms of variety, comedy, dynamics between the hosts, and the format. Keep up the amazing work!!! I will definitely keep listening:)

    I’ve changed my mind
For a while I thought this podcast was great, but the more I listen the more I get annoyed with Jesse. He is overbearing & cringey. Also, the content doesn’t even actually cover regular musicals, it’s a bunch of side content I didn’t sign up for. Nobody follows this podcast for “make me a musical” and nobody wants to hear about random disney cruise musicals that are only accessible to a few randoms. There is so much other relevant content to cover but all you talk about is trash. I really was a fan, but now I’m not. sorry to be so brutal, but it’s my honest opinion.

    Musicals for Channel Awesome Survivors
I started watching this because I wanted to listen to reviews of bad musicals (for fun) and discover new good ones. On that, this show delivers. There are plenty of musicals here that I’ve never heard of and will be looking into as a result. However, after a couple months you start hearing the repetitive nature of the pod. The jokes about Dear Evan Hansen and Ben Brantley are a mainstay and after a while they get old. It’s ironic that they make fun of Doug Walker and Nostalgia Critic because they’re clearly influenced by him. Yes they’ve improved over time but their tone gives me flashbacks to the days when I thought every review a white male janitor gave was gospel. Jesse even sounds like Doug. If you have sentiment for that time on YouTube, then give it a listen, but I’m done. There’s only so many of the same review I can listen to, especially when they happen up to three times a week.

    A great podcast!
I love the dynamics between Andrew and Jess it’s always fun to listen to them and their sense humor. I like how they have different sections like where they break down the songs in the musical and their thoughts on them and the review sections and the letterboxd game and the recurring jokes like the Segway into the patrons. Their takes are good and even if I don’t always agree with their takes it’s still fun to listen to. The episodes are always interesting and very funny and enjoyable to listen to.

    Fantastic Variety!
This podcast, which fans of musical theatre will love, has always had a really great variety in the shows it covers. It’s not just the big hits, but there’s a good helping of some lesser known shows. They’ve introduced me to several I’d not heard of before! It’s hard not to laugh along with the hosts, as they react to some of the cheesier aspects of the genre, but this show is certainly coming from a place of love and enthusiasm. Bravo! P.S. I hope you end up covering some Gilbert and Sullivan!

The Diana Episode was Maddening to Me
I haven’t seen the musical Diana, so I don't take issue with the hosts’ opinion about that. Rather, I take issue with the lack of historical research and belittling of mental health. Within the first half of that episode, they show a severe lack of research about recent English royal history. There is also a severe lack of compassion, insinuating wealth and societal status means one can’t have mental health troubles. It was very upsetting and turned me off to listening to this show in the future.

Horrible takes, particularly for the Amelie musical, just bad

    Down the musical rabbit hole
I thought I knew a lot about musicals until I started listening to this! Great information and I’ve genuinely scream-laughed a few times at the jokes, my neighbors must think I’m crazy. I now have a playlist of like 15 musicals to listen to. Sad on the Pride and Prejudice episode no one made the joke, “why doesn’t Mr. Darcy like cheese? Because his gouda-pinion once lost is lost forever”
  • Kelsea028
    Fun to listen to
I really appreciate that they talk about a lot of lesser known musicals, and the guests they have on are a blast (I particularly like their episode in which they reevaluate Rent, with Kelly Lin Hayes).
  • thelizzy
    Just what I never wanted…
Two straight dudes talking about musicals. Jesse mispronounces most things and sings flatly on every episode; Andrew doesn’t pay attention to what he’s supposed to watch/listen to, and ends up basically saying “I don’t remember that part” or “it was okay”. Bro: take some notes. You bring the whole show down. He literally adds nothing to the conversation. There is no depth, no nuance, and I get very concerned when Jesse makes himself laugh so hard he has a goddamn asthma attack.

    Entertaining and fun, but…
First, positive, I like listening to the podcast, it’s entraining and fun, and who doesn’t like when people are yelling at a show they don’t enjoy haha. But seriously, they make their critic entertaining. How ever this podcast opinions are just always align with mine, which I found it very frustrating. The way they deliver the critics is a little bit snobby/condescending, when sometimes, their takes on songs/shows are not completely on point. Anyways, listening to this is like arguing with friends about musicals, still, entertaining.
  • Jessa Sparkles
Great concept but likely won’t listen again
I love this idea it’s well informed but in the episode I was listening to “urinetown” someone was eating and talking with their mouth full. If you don’t have the basic respect for your audience or the work you’re covering to not eat on mic… like musical performances aren’t interrupted by someone eating on stage… then I don’t see why I should invest my time.

    I Can’t Stop Listening!
I found this podcast over the Thanksgiving holiday and can’t stop listening! This show has definitely grown from its early days when it was merely a five-star podcast to what is now a 5+++-star podcast! (Quick note: “I’m Still Here” was written for Yvonne de Carlo who was 50 at the time.)

    A review:
I know this show is good cause I’m always talking back and responding and laughing and arguing with Jess and Andrew even though they can’t hear me.
  • TheBoojum
    Really smart and bingeable
Been listening all day to these sharp, analytical and frequently hilarious conversations about musicals and musical theater writing, and I’m delighted and impressed. Great range of topics, covering popular and semi-obscure shows alike; this is everything I could hope for in a musical theater podcast.
  • lookimadeahat
    Do a little research….
If you’re going to spend the time reviewing and critiquing a musical, do your research first and know a little more about the show. It’s embarrassing to hear you attempt to talk about Ragtime when you don’t even know some of the talking points and general information about the show. Shallow discussion and incompetent analysis.
  • Amaria_Rain
    Fun with friends
Love hearing these conversations . It is literally similar to what discussions I have with my friends after seeing a show or movie

    Disappointing…
I love this podcast but it is frustrating that only being a fan and not a Patreon supporter earns any sort of appreciation. After participating in the livestream and trying to engage with the creative team in ways that they list at the end of each episode, it is very clear that the only support that is acknowledged is financial. Times are tough, and even though the team certainly deserves compensation for their content, it makes it difficult to continue supporting this podcast when all you hear is “donate to Patreon” and then they will answer you.

    One of my favorites
I started listening in 2018-2019 (close to the start of the show). I am a patron of the show but It is worth the money. It feels like your listening to your older siblings talking about stuff your also interested in, while also getting different perspectives at the same time. Jess, Andrew, and Bree work so hard to create a podcast that is for both theatre and non theatre lovers, and it pays off. I truly love this show and I hope to be listening for years to come. I love the people behind this podcast and on the discord so much. They are super supportive of anyone and everyone!!! Love you guys!!!

Hands-down my favorite theatre podcast. Love the dynamic between Jesse and Andrew and their commentary is hilarious. So much fun to listen to and highly recommended!

    Best Podcast Ever!!
Not to be dramatic or anything, but this is definitely the best podcast, period. At least, it's my favorite, which automatically means it's the best. In seriousness, I love the Musicals With Cheese podcast. Every episode strikes the perfect balance of hilarious and insightful, and it always leaves me in a better mood after each episode. I also adore the format of the show. The hosts really get to sink their teeth into the show of the week while also keeping it moving, and they really dig into the show's story, music, and even the culture that surrounds the show. I wish I wasn't a broke college kid, because I'd definitely be contributing half my paycheck to their patreon if I had any money to spend at the moment. The best I can do is leave a positive review and tune into every new episode (and replay the old ones). I can't recommend this show enough. It's genuinely one of the only things I look forward to anymore.
  • Prezi Henz
Not Oaxaca cheese, but a decent Monterrey Jack
I love the concept of having a musical theatre podcast entirely dedicated to making someone like musical theatre with each show that gets reviewed. Its relaxed tone makes musicals cool to have as topics of conversation. I also appreciate that it’s distinct from the other musical theatre podcasts hosted by 2 white men. Although the constant mispronunciation of “reprise” and frequent personal disagreements with the hosts’ opinions prevent it from being granted 5 stars by this reviewer, it’s still a great comfort to listen to and I’m happy to be a dedicated listener.
