The Mash-Up Americans

222

The Mash-Up Americans is your guide to the hyphen-America world we all live in. Amy S. Choi and Rebecca Lehrer talk culture, identity, what makes us who we are. Get to know yourself, America.

At The Mash-Up Americans we are celebrating and challenging the raucous, colorful, complicated country we live in by asking all the important, awkward questions: What does it mean to be an immigrant in America? What cultural baggage do we bring to sex and relationships? Why is Korean skincare so popular? When does something get upgraded from the ethnic aisle?

    In my top 5
Love this podcast so much it's in my top 5 to listen to. They give a great voice from themselves and their guests who all "mash up" and bring diversity in food and culture and how it impacts our relationships. Highly recommend!

    Hilarity & hard topics
I love this podcast — it’s a guide to living in our multicultural world, whether or not you consider yourself a “mashup” (and hint: you probably are one). They ask questions I’m usually not comfortable enough to ask and are so genuine in trying to help people find answers as we try to define our mashy lives.

  • Gotta choose a name not taken
    good stuff
I’m probably a little older than the typical audience for The Mash-Up Americans, but I was surprised to find it really engaging. I feel my outlook being broadened and deepened with each episode. And they are fun and funny as well.

    Enlightening and Hilarious
I realize I am absolutely not the demographic for this podcasts. I am a black woman in her mid-40s, no degree (but some college). I love this podcast! I love learning a different perspective from people of other cultures. I appreciate that they interview people from every different ethnic group you can think of and they have perspectives that I would absolutely NEVER know if it wasn't for this podcast. Thank you for this great podcast & you are fantastic hosts, the conversations flow easily & are not stilted like other podcasts I've listened to. Keep doing what you are doing. The world needs this.

    Love this podcast!!!
I discovered this through a mention on another podcast and decided to give it a whirl. I'm SOOOOO glad I did!!! The topics and the people they interview are interesting, the hosts are a lot of fun, and topics can be challenging without being threatening to someone who isn't "mashy" in the overt ways they are (in my case I *am* a mash-up of English, Scottish, and German with a tiny bit of Italian/Greek and Iberian peninsula thrown in...but still very much of Western European origin). That's not always the case when race and issues come up with some other podcasts. Definitely a breath of fresh air! Cannot wait for the next season!!

For mash-ups and those who may not feel like "mash-ups"
Something for everyone in every episode. I personally have felt connected to almost every episode. They cover a wide array of subjects and I love it!

Thank you! I love your podcast!!!
I am so thankful to have found you. As a first generation immigrant and third culture kid I often feel like I don't fully identify with anyone, and no place feels like true home. I've been in the US since I was 13, and moved throughout South America before that. I've been in the US for 17 years now but I still have no true sense of belonging. (Don't get me wrong, I have some wonderful people in my life!) I am now married to an African American man, which adds to that *Mashiness* too! :) your show and stories from you and your guests remind me I am not alone and inspire me. THANK YOU

Can you guys just come over for dinner sometime?
I adore this podcast and always learn something new. It feels so familiar and like I'm just in a room chatting and dining with friends even when they have on heavy hitters. If the entire country was listening to, engaging with, and working to understand the substance of their own "mashiness" as well as that of their neighbors', we'd be in a much better place. Thanks for guiding us in doing this important work.

Mash up's hosts remind me of my closest friends. We share a curiosity about the world. These ladies also share that fun loving curiosity. They bring people together in a spirit of kindness and friendliness to talk about identity, culture, and ethnicity. Thanks! :)

    Fantabulous!
I recently discovered this good west coast podcast on the east coast. One of the best shows I was waiting for! I’m not much of a mashup myself but love these kinds of stories and discussions on the fantastic diversity within America, immigration stories, and mashup people! Plus the hosts are funny, well-informed, organized, and interesting!

A podcast that speaks out for my heart
I love this podcast because I can understand on so many levels the cultural allusions and problems that they talk about. I am Korean American, and so not only do I have my ideas about culture verified, I also learn a lot about other subcultures in the US. And Amy, there's Konglish for Korean+English. But you can call it Koreanglish.

    Mashup Americans is totally awesome.
I'm a Kenyan American mash-up American (Yes, Obama isn't the only one) who lives in So Cal and your show is my life. Mashup African/Americans call ourselves "Halfricans" - were all over the place! Thanks for this much needed podcast!
  • lucylu6
    Funny, informal, insightful
I'm a mashup American but don't generally seek out discussions on race or identity. This one is great - the hosts are funny and relaxed but also don't ramble - real insights come out. A truly enjoyable and interesting listen.

Making the world a better place, one podcast at a time!
This podcast nails diversity, one of my favorite topics being a mash up myself! It's important for people to reach out and learn about others, as Mark Twain once said "travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts." I highly encourage you to travel with Amy and Rebecca as they cover topics that will leave you culturally satiated until their next episode, which honestly doesn't seem to come soon enough, bravo ladies!

Couldn't be happier that I found this podcast
I very much enjoy this podcast and look forward to new episodes. A smart, insightful yet humorous and thoughtfully put together podcast on diversity in America. Each episode they show how diverse America is, how diverse each of us is and why diversity is so lovely. It's nice to know that there is a large platform of mashups out there. Thank you for giving a voice to a group of people who sometimes get overlooked. Showing that you can be America and be different is so important. I love that this podcasts celebrates all of us as we are instead of trying to have people fit into a certain box or stereotypical idea.

    The Obama of Podcast
I’m so glad that I found this podcast. The nuances and the intricacies of the lives and stories in the episodes will hit home for all the immigrants, the multi-culturals, the multi-linguals, the third culture kids, the mixed-ethnics, the military brats, and anyone who has lived between and among different boundaries. It’s personal, thoughtful, emotional, provocative, and entertaining. Words can’t describe how much this podcast means to me. Thank you.

    great Podcast for the car
I love listening to audio books and podcasts in my car while running errands and grocery shopping. This is a great one to add to my favorites. I love Amy and Rebecca. This episode cracked me up when their Jewish friend came and explained the customs of the holiday. My husband is jewish and I’m Italian (food, not catholic) and I had no idea how to hang at these events initially. Good stuff! Don’t blow out the candles!
