PharaijinFantastic Insights Into Classic GamesI’ve been following the show for years and can’t recommend it more highly. The show covers a variety of classic games over many genres, and playing along with the show is incredibly rewarding when the hosts dig into what works for the game and why. Even if you aren’t playing along, you will be hooked by Brett and Tim’s analysis and banter, backed by decades of real game developer industry experience.

_Iceboy_A peek behind the curtains of the classicsI just found this show and have binged it for about ten episodes straight. Love the industry insider knowledge and insights into how my favorites from childhood might have been envisioned and executed. The slow and thoughtful play-through of Ocarina of Time was fantastic. I hope some day they will get to Majoras Mask. Keep up the great work, and thanks for making my commutes so interesting.

Ashmann86One of the best!DGC is an underrated gem. If the only thing the show had to offer was two veteran game designers talking about classic games and what makes them impactful, it would be worth subscribing. But that’s not all. The guests they get on the show are all incredible too, including some super-high profile folks in the industry. If you’ve ever wanted to by a fly on the wall while talented game developers talk shop with one another, this is the podcast for you.

Midknight22Awesome discussion with a great perspective!Brett and Tim’s fascinating discussion is the highlight of my morning commute. I am working my way there the back catalogue and have just reached the Dark Souls Discussion. To hear about your journeys of in that game, after being such a big fan of the Souls series is amazing!

Would love to hear the hosts take on Wizardry that digital eclipse just remade.

Kodie MartinA Refreshing Way to Enjoy GamesI recently discovered this podcast by searching for podcasts related to Super Mario 64 and stumbled upon the old series the two of them did. As I grow older, I appreciate the finer details and nuances in what makes a game work, in addition to great history and storytelling. Brett and Tim do an excellent job and I’ve come to appreciate them and the fantastic content that they have put out and as a newer listener, have quite a backlog to go through. I’ve also decided to pick up and play some of the games they have done since they have made it sound fun again when videos games lost their luster. Kudos to the two of them, especially keeping the podcast clean, that’s always a bonus for me.

njallainGreat podcast by insightful developersI feel bad that it’s taken me so long to write this review. I listen on Overcast so writing any review is a bit inconvenient. As a gamer and (ancient) developer, I really appreciate their insite into the game development process. I don’t know what else I can add except that if you’re interested in game design, listen to this podcast!
-
Max42357Great showBrett and Tim seem like wonderful people and it’s a pleasure to walk through some of the best games with them.
-
WrigleyFieldMarshalKeep the Woke Crap Away from Gaming PodcastsWhen almost seven minutes into an episode, one of the hosts mentions the problems with cis white males, I know this isn’t a good podcast for gaming.
-
cbb2016So goodGreat conversations between two seemingly great people about great games. Lets go!! Since they read reviews on the show: can you tell us about what you’re currently working on and if the podcast has affected those projects in any way? -my real name

ZeriquinnInformative funThe Elder Scrolls Morrowind discussions have really made me want to go back and play the game. Such a fun and informative podcast! I look forward to new episodes as well as the back log I have to catch up on.

mysterydipA review to the tune of "life is a highway"Life is like a game that you're playing on When it's new one day and the next day gone Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose Sometimes you bounce off the game you choose There's a world inside every darkened door of gamedev choices made before Where the brave code free and designers soar Come hear with me to find out more They won't hesitate To play through Baldur's Gate Or other games of the past I love this podcast I wanna hear it all night long If you're into old games You'll wanna hear it all night long From giant worlds to just a town It's in my blood and it's all around I love games now like I loved them then It's a newer screen but the same old hands From Azeroth to Arabian nights Dodge a sword swing or a blaster's light Knock me down and game over again Restore a save at the boss's den There's no game they can't load Some edges rough this they know I like to hear when guests come on With tales of survival I love this podcast I wanna hear it all night long If you're into old games You'll wanna hear it all night long

tantuarReviews are weird but I like this showThis show provides a unique perspective to the gaming industry and how peers look at each other’s work. Believe it or not, game devs like playing games :0 the content is interesting and at a pace that highlights more intimate concepts and ideas. As so much of the gaming industry is a toxic boys club and even the “good guys” never acknowledge unacceptable behavior, I feel as thought Tim and Brett always bring up the way things haven’t aged as well and how we can always do better. Thanks for being stand up guys and having an engaging and informative podcast for the hardcore nerds out there. Hope y’all keep loving it and keep doing it.

mcouch1984These guys…Have no idea what they are talking about in regards to CHRONO Trigger… come on guys… Medina village in 1000 AD is not a separate timeline it’s the regular… just across the ocean from Truce … where chrono is from. Don’t know the names of items or enemies… A very lackluster discussion of one of the best rpgs ever made. One should take better notes as to not be a disservice to a classic.

MattSattamFind a game they did that interests you and go!Recently, I decided to play the classic Fallout. It can be a little unusual playing it all these years later because you can lose context of the time and place, and what it was that made such a widely regarded classic like OG Fallout standout (especially if you’re younger like me). Taking breaks by listening to fun, intelligent game designers discuss and dissect things flips that on its head. I just finished their Fallout series and I can’t wait to dive into the Ocarina of Time one. Find a game they’ve done that interests you and go!

ZeroshenAn enjoyable and insightful podcast about video game developmentFrom ArmsTech President, Kenneth Baker I was first turned on to this podcast by my brother when he sent me a link and time stamp where he wrote in to the two hosts and shared an anecdote about how my name appears in a PlayStation 1 game called Metal Gear Solid (a game they spent several episodes playing and discussed it’s relevance and impact to game development today). I thought it was a funny one-time thing, however I started listening and found that hosts Tim and Brett have very interesting and insightful discussions around game development, regardless of whether or not you’ve played the game they’re talking about. They will occasionally have very engaging interviews with other video game developers, or people in the industry, that give off the sense of very genuine and thoughtful conversation from both sides. I highly recommend this podcast if you appreciate the fact that a lot of work and dedication goes into video game development, and the two hosts’ combined experience, along with their funny commentary and general friendship, make for a very enjoyable podcast that I look forward to every week. I would also like to point out the detailed Show Notes included with each episode; it must take a fair amount of effort to keep up with that each week! Headphones are also recommended as host Tim is often a light talker, however no complaints as they produce this excellent podcast free of charge. :)

668 The Neighbor of The BeastFinal Fantasy VIMy first foray into RPGs and I had no idea what what going on. I was playing someone’s saved file from a video rental and when I attacked a bunch of numbers showed up in the screen. A few years later (and older... obviously) I tried FFVI again knowing now how RPGs operate. I adore this game and is tied as my favorite RPG along with FFIX and Chrono Trigger. Good luck gentlemen and don’t leave any party member behind. PS: you’re wrong about Edgar, he one of the best

Frost RavenFantastic podcastAs an older person with great memories of playing the classics like Baldur’s Gate and Thief, it’s so great listening to these 2 experienced hosts discuss these games through the lens of game development and design. I also really appreciate the clean language so I can listen around my kids, just an outstanding listen each and every time. Keep up the great work!
-
etcetera, etceteraIntelligent and accessible2 smart dudes talkin’ video game development. Good stuff.
-
tylenardoBest video game podcast aroundI started listening with the half-life series and have since went back to listen to all the back catalog and have immensely enjoyed it. It’s great going back and reliving old favorite games and hearing interesting facts about how they were made. The interviews with other game devs are my favorites as I love to hear the inside stories from people who built these games. Super excited to finish the Link to the Past series as it was the first video game I ever beat as a kid. I loved it so much I immediately started playing again from the start.

RooeeellllBiggest FanChorus - X2 It’s Tuesday and I’m wondering why I opened your podcast at all. I knew there wouldn’t be anything new for me to listen on there from y’all. Less than 24 hours before a new upload It reminds me, that it’s not so bad It’s not so bad --- Dear Brett and Tim, Sorry I haven’t written, I don’t listen on Itunes. I thought about writing a review on Google podcast but they don’t allow that. But anyways, forget it, what’s been up? I know you probably hear this every day, but I’m your biggest fan. I’ve been listening and playing since your Super Metroid days. I tune in to you guys on Google, Spotify and follow you on Twitter. I like hearing your wise input on what made the classic games great. My favorite episodes are the ones involving guest, they’re the best. Anyways, I hope you sing this, I’ll be listening. Truly yours, your biggest fan. This is Roel (Ro-L) Song: Eminem - Stan

Samspot101Must-listen show for players, developers, and gaming historians!Fantastic podcast for anyone interested in the history of video games, aspiring developers, or someone simply looking for recommended games to play and think deeply about. Not only do Brett & Tim bring their own great insights, but they also bring on really notable and interesting guests and draw out stories you’ve never known about your favorite games! If that isn’t enough, they also read listener emails and talk deeply about the questions we ask. Wow! S-rank podcast, 5 stars isn’t enough! May your heart be your guiding key.

Blarg-42My favourite podcastI´ve listened to a lot of gaming podcasts through the years, many of them great. But for me Dev Game Club takes the proverbial cake, easily. I always make sure to never miss an episode, and I've even listened to some multiple times, when I get in the mood to try out one of the many games they've featured throughout the years. Probably the best way to listen is to play alongside hosts Brett and Tim as they make their way through some iconic titles from the past, but even when they play something I've never heard of (what's an Anachronox? is it contagious??) I still find it enjoyable, as the insights and expertise they bring to the table are second to none..Also, I've heard rumours that they have quite the fondness for late 90's anime theme tunes, who knew..Or maybe thats just my wishful thinking? :P

Ani_MitchellExemplaryAt first, when I began listening, I was naturally attracted by the nature of the content. This may come as no surprise and there are many podcasts about all varieties of gaming. However, aside from the quality content, this podcast is unique from so many in how engaged and respected the listener feels while listening. Personally, I have come to respect Brett and Tim over the years, value their time-earned insights, and even see them as mentors. This review is long overdue and I plan to be more involved from now on, keep up the great work guys!

HKris7Game Designer KnowledgeRecently got into World of Warcraft and it’s been great hearing these two talk about the game that started WoW and everything surrounding it’s initial launch. Great Podcast. GG
-
nickmccomy favorite insightinstead of a normal review, i’ll post my favorite insight from this podcast (so far). in the pokémon red and blue episodes, the hosts mentioned that jrpgs of the time had the inherent problem of wanting to reward exploration, but discouraging it with random battles; and that pokémon solved this issue by turning random battles into a gatcha-like slot machine where the enemies are the prizes. overall i find these podcasts much more insightful than many youtube “video essays,” polygon articles, the few books i’ve read, and other well-regarded media on game design. episodes on nintendo games tend to be the best, probably because they don’t know them that well and can notice design decisions which i take for granted as i played them all ten years ago.

Eric KozGreat, but sometimes frustrating listening experienceReally enjoy the diversity of games played and the angle of criticism through the lens of a game developer. However it can be frustrating to hear them sometimes conjecture and guess at facts that could have been easily researched beforehand. I would never expect them to know everything about everything but I think a little preparation would go a long way.
-
Boris of AlzeyUnique background infos and perspectives! This is a great podcast for people who are interested in dissecting gaming milestones from a designer perspective and hopefully learn from it. I wish the creators would choose a couple more games they were involved in personally, such as Star Wars Starfighter, or pick a series of games, such as Indiana Jones games. What happens to the Indy game that was shown at E3 2006 that used the Euphoria engine and then disappeared? These would be fascinating topics, I think. Anyway, thank you for making this great podcast!
-
LogisverðExcellent workGood topics, excellent guests (!), usually good insight too. The only criticism I have is that, for games the hosts have not really played much before, they should do a deeper dive and have some notes on hand while recording the episode. The Pokemon episode was emblematic of this issue, although the hosts seemed self-aware. For these sorts of episodes they deviate too much and bring in very tangential knowledge to the point that I was wondering whether I was listening about Pokemon or just listening about JRPGs and hardware.

MJVogt85The Patient Gamer’s Ultimate PodcastI can’t decide if it’s more fun to hear Tim and Brett discuss a classic game you know like the back of your hand, or to discover a new favorite as you play along with their book club-style discussions. Fun, wholesome conversations abound, and great community engagement, including...singing reviews! To the tune of “Paranoid Android” by Radiohead Please can you stop that noise, I’m trying to hear the ‘cast About modern takes on some great games from the past With Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeett And Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim [skip ahead a bit] A podcast that won’t cost you any money Discussions both informative and funny [skip ahead a bit more] You should be listening You should be listening If you like games, then tune in to Dev Game Club

CaffienatedBrushesAppreciate the insight!I have loved video games my whole life. I enjoy listening to tales of game development, problems that developers face, how things have changed from one generation of games to the next, and the pillars that make up the design of each game (whether that game is a success or a failure.) I think because of this podcast, among some others, a new generation could make some really awesome new games in the next 20 years! Even without loot boxes...

TheSentry42Awesome Insight into Video Game as Art, Engineering, and CultureThis is a fannnnnnntastic podcast! Tim and Brett give incredible insight into the video game industry, creation, art, technical aspects, and the culture around it all. I appreciate how down to earth they are and their patience with making their points clear and meaningful for their audience. They have a real care and enthusiasm for video games and the people who both make and play games! I love how they use this podcast as a way of improving, challenging, and developing their own craft and helping others. I give Tim and Brett 6 out of 5 Stars! They and their content rock!

Derv_PNWGreat perspective on classic games. Can't say enough about how much I've enjoyed this podcast. I've been listening since the Resident Evil episodes, and it's become a Wednesday morning tradition for me. Brett and Tim's deep dives into classic games has been a big source of inspiration for me as I've been working on a hobby game in Unity. The insight and analysis they provide into game development is something I think any fan of gaming would enjoy. They've also had several excellent interviews with fellow industry veterans that provide even more behind-the-scenes details of how these games were developed. Series highlights for me have been Super Metroid, X-COM, Half Life, and Link to the Past. Even if I haven't played the game they're on, I am still able to learn a lot from their discussion. Thanks to Brett Douville and Tim Longo Junior with a JR at the end for a great podcast.
-
journeyman2011101010A glorious, fascinating, can't-miss voyage – in weekly installments – through the halcyon, sometimes quixotic history of video games, an artistic medium that elevates, inspires, and connects us with human (and extra-human) experiences like none other. Thanks, Brett and Tim, for the invaluable gifts of (thankfully critical) nostalgia and visions that the future of gaming may be quite bright.
-
LamestarGamesLove this podcast! The two battle worn video game industry veterans play some of the most influential games in a book club like fashion. Their insight into the tools and techniques that make these games, provide this cast with a plethora of information that is unique and relevant. Keep up the great work 🤙

JogsidfVideogames are even cooler than I thought; and I’m a gamer!I’ve been listening for over a year now, and I just want to say that I’ve learned a lot more about games than I could have anticipated. I’m only 22—I thought that having experienced the PSOne through today gave me a good perspective on games. Little did I know that my hubris made me blind to a whole paradigm of gaming which has been under appreciated in today. I’ve learned a lot, however what I have taken away most is this: many aspects of gaming I took as modern novelties like truly open environments (not arenas), nonlinear gameplay, real RPG stats, etc. had, in fact, been MORE prevalent in a previous age of gaming. This podcast has made me go back and look at these titles: System Shock, Deus Ex, Fallout, Ultima Underworld, Sierra’s Quest games, etc. have all become favorites of mine. Thanks for bringing these treasures to a new generation of geeks.

Jazzafrazz42Gaming Podcast by Devs for GamersThis is one of the easiest podcasts to listen to! As developers, Brett and Tim (or Tim and Brett?) really bring some insightful discussion into our lives about some of the best retro games, both well known and a little more obscure. I always look forward to hearing their thoughts on the various games and how they influence modern game development. Can’t wait for the next episode each week!

So let's play it again, 'cause its impact remains They ain't just good games, they're all great games There's only Brett and Tim and they’re just DGC Awww Aww Jeez, You-ou know

Mazirian the magGreat retro-gaming podcastVery relaxing to listen to and knowledgeable veteran game developers play and talk about games.

Joseph KrullThe Perfect Amount of DepthI listened to this show's multi-part discussion of Fallout 1 on the basis of a positive reference from another games-based podcast I listen to. I love the game and I loved the discussion, which was nuanced and complete without being totally in the weeds. And I say I enjoyed it *despite* the patently ridiculous offhand remarks they occasionally made, like "Fallout 1 doesn't have any notable voice actors." You can decide for yourself whether such slander of Tony Shalhoub and (for God's sake) MacGyver is too much to bear. For me, I found a way to look past it. Barely. 5/5, great stuff.
-
GrehtnFinally a gaming podcast focused on game analysis. The two devs take one game and play it all the way through. And rather retelling the story they analyze their experience from a gameplay angle. One of my endless frustrations when trying to find an in depth gaming podcast is often the two hosts will spend an enormous amount of time just retelling the story. And I appreciate, so much, that Brett and Tim often gloss over the story and instead talk about the interesting mechanics at play. It's really valuable to me. The hosts have a great ying-yang relationship. Brett's, reserved, emotionless, deadpan, personality helps balance out all the joy and excitement Tim expresses. Joking aside I love the little things about this podcast, from Brett's intros, Tim pointing out subtle mechanics, to the freakin show notes. A true gem. And if I were to suggest an episode to start with, it would be Planescape Torment (ep 58), in which they go in depth about game mechanics and narrative that no other podcast I've listened to has matched. Thank you. Zimmy Finger (Grehtn is also not my real name).
-
The2ndQuestEntertaining & informativeReally enjoyable series that sheds some new perspectives and insights into familiar and classic games. Sometimes those perspectives and insights come from the hosts having never played a game before, sometimes from a range of past experience with a title and sometimes simply helping the listener themselves reevaluate something familiar that we we may have taken for granted. All wrapped in further insights from their experience within the industry itself. Highly recommended.
-
DabominicTwo Dev FriendsThere's a great rapport between Brett and Tim. And their insight is valuable to all creators and lovers of video games.
