Apocrypals

A podcast where two non-believers read through the Bible but try not to be jerks about it. Join comics writers Benito Cereno and Chris Sims as they journey through the Good Book from Acts to Zephaniah, with stops in the Apocrypha along the way.

Long-time and far-behind listener. This show is one of my very favorite pieces of media. It’s informative, funny, and full of such niche references that it feels tailor made to my own interests. It’s incredibly good

Never thought I’d listen to a bible podcast
My partner suggested this podcast to me. He’s a recovering catholic, I’m former evangelical. But honestly I love this show. I love learning about history and it’s been the only way I’ve ever learned anything about the Bible. I even started listening to War Rocket Ajax because biscuits dad is cool.

    Great show
You will learn and laugh. I wish the music drops weren’t so loud. Great place to learn about Bible.

    The Perfect Show
for me, given its mix of history, mythology, theology, and comic book lore. Once the Roy Thomas refs started flying, I knew I had found something special. Breaking down the Gospels into the Ages of Comics really spoke my language.

    Greatest (and Only) Bible Podcast!
Love this show - great summation and retelling of the stories in a clear, humorous way that does not come off as insulting while still pointing out the fantastical elements that are most surprising. Very funny guys, one is smart and the other is also smart! Listen to every episode, they’re all excellent!

    Just two very nice guys
This podcast is so calming, I listen to it frequently, when there's a new episode and almost every night when I use it to lull myself to sleep. Something about these two men talking about Bible is very soothing.

    Cozy
This show is so laid back and nerdy and sweet. Their humour is not cool and the show can often get lost in the weeds. But! This makes them very endearing and I love listening to this when I want a non-threatening, low energy aura around me. Also— I love hearing about the scholarship around the Bible and history.

    Love this show
Two very nice boys not being jerks at all about the Bible. This show has really helped me with my deconstruction, giving me a new way to engage with texts used in harmful ways in my youth.

A good podcast for many audiences
Benito and Chris do an excellent job of going through the Bible and all sorts of apocrypha. As someone who was raised evangelical Christian and no longer identifies as such, I find it very enlightening to hear a fresh take on the stories I grew up with. Their tagline of “Not being jerks about it” is also VERY refreshing, as it gets tiresome to hear people be, well, jerks about it, even if I’m not a part of it anymore. Also, there are several repeating Alvin and the Chipmunks jokes that make me laugh every time, I’m sure to Chris’ dread.

The best and only bible podcast
Great show and surprisingly insightful. Benito and Chris are a great team. One is a clown and the other is scholar, and it’s up to you to decide which is which.

    Shallow Thoughts, Deep Answers
I deleted Twitter and never had a Tumblr, so this is my only way to reach the hosts (without joining their Discord, which I assume is nice but not for me). But take my word for it, pondering this question is an accurate way to tell if you’ll enjoy the podcast: Was Golgotha a weird hill to die on?

    Fantastic listen
The two hosts do such a good job of talking about the books of the bible and associated texts in a way that is both accessible and interesting. Special shout out to their coverage of Revelation, a book that freaks me out unless they’re the ones talking about it. I’ve relistened to all these episodes more times than I can count, and I’m always stoked when a new episode drops.

    Informative and entertaining!
I left the Church long ago, but I’ve always been interested in the Bible as a work of literature. This podcast deftly mixes religion, history, and humor to make for an excellent listening experience. Don’t miss it! Edit: also my favorite Beatles podcast. Thanks for speaking the truth about you-know-who!

    Best and Fav Podcast
I’ve been listening to these guys since 2018 and they’ve remained solidly as my favorite podcast all this time. Very respectful and funny discussions of christian and jewish texts, without being stiff or uncomfortable. It makes me so happy to see atheists/agnostics engaging with the texts with actual passion and interest, without the need to tear the faiths down OR build them up. It just is what it is! Approximately 10/10 stars, 5 gallons of bread, 2 good boys, and 1 biggest fan. Keep it up! 💛 P.S, I’ll even forgive Chris for hating Job, my fave book of the bible. You’re valid
  • Eleutherios_171924
The only podcast I’ve ever bothered to review
Because it’s one of the best around! An incredible mix of edifying expertise, clarifying commentary, and the goodest goofs. Give it a listen - you won’t regret it.
  • CallMeDanza
    Bible school, but good
Did you ever want to learn about the Bible and biblical apocrypha but just couldn’t keep at it because every time you tried there weren’t enough millennial music drops, weather updates, etymological dissections, and deep cut lore? This is the show for you. If you grew up churchy, this is everything that you wish bible school would have been, the kind of content that would pack the pews every Sunday if only it weren’t so weird that it would provoke far more questions than it answers. Authentically educational and highly entertaining.

    Extremely good
A great introduction to biblical apocrypha and pseudepigrapha for fans of obscure comics and vice versa

    Love these guys
This podcast is fantastic. I was recommended this by Jonathan Sims from The Magnus Archives as a way to challenge yourself on your Bible knowledge. As someone who has Jewish ancestry, but raised Roman Catholic and went to Catholic school until high school, majored in comparative world mythology and religion in college, and just has a general interest in learning this podcast is great. The hosts do a great job walking a line between academic and comedic. The sheer amount of comic book references alone are a reason to keep me coming back. I’m 25 episodes in at present and I look forward to the next one every time I open the podcast app. Great job, lads. Keep up the great work.

    A good time
As someone who is pursuing academic degrees in biblical studies and a general Bible geek, I cannot recommend this podcast enough. I discovered it thanks to the YouTube channel ComicTropes, and have fallen in love with it. It is nice being able to put an episode on while I am working around the house or just trying to decompress. The hosts are great, and take an open minded approach to the subjects. They have respected these text and those who believe in them, while at the same time have been able to crack jokes about the text in genuinely funny ways. It is nice hearing people discuss the text in a more lite hearted manner after studying it in a formal setting all day. This show has also given me knew eyes in which to see the text. As a life long Christian and a formal student, I am quite familiar with the text and ways that people have interpreted it. So being able to hear both a survey of views and a well articulated perspective of someone is not as familiar with the text is great. I also love the fact that the hosts are comic writers. The biblical text and comics are my two loves, and seeing them come together like this is wonderful.

    Great show
Wonderful show to give you contextual information about the most misrepresented document in American society.

    Reinforced my feeling of non-belief
Came into listening with the understanding that this would be an informative, yet comedic reading of the Bible. You did not disappoint, although my S/O (staunch believer) is a bit disappointed. lol. Have you thought of doing other religious literature readings? Islam, Norse, Egypt, Hindu etc ?
  • Clairilyn
    Delightfully informative and entertaining
Benito and Chris provide a delightfully in-depth and hilarious walk through of the Bible’s submission winners and runners up. I have never so enjoyed a traipse through classical antiquity with comic book references and really thoughtful reviews and discussions of deep topics. I’m still looking for a “Skull Mountain Chapel” T-shirt.

    Unapologetics for the Bible Curios
Before discovering this podcast, I assumed I was the only comic book creator with a deep interest in non-canonical Biblical texts, but it turns out there are at least two others. Both my grandpas were preachers in conservative churches, so Christianity was inseparable from my family. Oddly, the more I studied the Bible and accumulated life experience, the more my religious beliefs unraveled. I can’t imagine how anyone can take a deep scholarly look at scripture and not question everything you thought you learned in Sunday School. From talking dogs to cosmic foreskins, this podcast leaves no cuneiform tablet unturned in its investigation of the origins of the Biblical canon and all the weird parts that were left out.
  • Reviewer Moose
    Top notch
This podcast has the most complete and in depth knowledge of biblical history I’ve ever heard.
  • link040188
    Highly recommend
Regardless of the sporadic release schedule this show always jumps to the front of my playlist when a new episode drops and i recommend it to all my friends that listen to podcasts. Benito puts so much heart into the recordings and the bonus episodes. And Chris I mean do I even need to say what he brings to the show? They could make another podcast discussing anything and call it The Scholar and the Clown and I still would listen and have no idea which one is which.
  • DGH and Yeti
    Disappointing
This is the podcast where two non-believers sometimes read through the Bible and are often jerks about it.
  • xX-Kellan-Xx
    Outstanding Podcast
I’ve listened to all their episodes, and now I’m on the 2nd play through. As a millennial raised in a southern Baptist church, I relate well to this podcast. Benito is very knowledgeable, and I enjoy hearing church kid stories similar to what I’ve experienced. I like that he cares so much about saying correct, and not misleading, information. Chris brings a very witty and a somewhat differing perspective the way he interprets their readings. When he discusses his points, I often think, “huh, I didn’t think about it like that.” It has been great to help make me think outside of my box. He is super comic book man, so I don’t understand some of the pop culture references, but his music drops are great. Outstanding podcast, even better hosts.

    It’s Real Good
A friend of mine recommended this podcast to me about a week and a half ago and I’m already like 20 episodes in which has annoyed my other friend since I’m supposed to be reading a book with him but instead I’m learning about Ahiqar training kids to ride eagles for sky construction
  • jilliana60
    Great podcast, but
Can one of you lay off Paul? I am listening to specific episodes while I read the epistles in my lay theology class and I get that there is a lot in there not to like, especially when you consider what some religious groups have used these texts to promote. But I think your dislike should be directed at those groups rather than the man Paul, who clearly had a world shattering experience that led him to spend the rest of his life trying to create a better world, enduring all kinds of personal hardship including torture, imprisonment, and eventual martyrdom and receiving no worldly gain at all.
  • Rlg64
    Informative and Funny!
I am really enjoying this podcast. I’m still a couple years behind but love the way the information is presented and the hosts seem to have a lot of fun doing it.
  • JGobble
Love experiencing the texts when they’re thoroughly explained!
As a Jew I was skeptical at the idea of listening to a Bible-based podcast at ALL - much less one authored by two “non-believers”…but color me shocked! It works! I mean it works WELL! There are so many books of theBible, texts ,and Apocrypha that I wouldn’t begin to know how to link together coherently. These two guys know that. And they know what most people THINK is missing in each book and in most cases WHY it is missing - or intentionally left out! This show is a gem and I enjoy every episode…yes, even the one where they review The DaVinci Code! Now where’s the review of The Ten Commandments, guys? Or maybe The Greatest Story Ever Told? ::wink:: ::wink::

    a wonderful surprise
it’s not often i listen to a podcast without it having been recommended to me first but wow i'm glad i took a chance and pressed play on this one. catching up on their back catalogue now and i can’t stop listening. perfect amount of pop culture references i get (which are always a delightful surprise) and one’s i don't (still fun) and i’ll be honest this podcast has almost singlehandedly convinced me to go into religious studies just from how interesting it all is. very thankful for the historical context Benito gives for everything!
  • hefixesthecable
I’ve spent too much time on church already
I went to private Christian schools from kindergarten through high school and then went to Oral Robert’s University, which required about 360 hours spent in church/chapel over the course of 4 years, so I have spent a *lot* of time in church or getting preached at. Yet, I still willingly spend a Sunday afternoon listening to these two goofballs talk Bible.

not yet dunked in a river but…
hands down my favorite podcast discovery of 2021! went back and listened to the whole back catalogue and found myself utterly charmed by the goof-em-ups and talk of Hangry Jesus™️. hope chris and benito keep the eps coming forever!! like many reviewers i have absolutely no idea what any of the comics references mean but love every second of them. thank you humble sons of thunder

    Yahweh’s bustin out all over
As an ex-vangelical queer person who has a complex relationship with religion I really appreciate the “try not to be jerks about it” approach. I understand almost none of the comics references but that almost adds to the charm. Every once in a while there’s an obscure reference goof that has me weeping in my car and writing a review the moment I get home.

I love this podcast! Funny and informative
I hope you keep making more episodes for some time!

    Answers the Important Question
I found this podcast through the Magnus Archives and now it’s what I listen to when I drive long distances for my job. I love the banter and sensible and realistic approach to a book that’s been mythologized and appropriated in today’s environment in a manner that’s largely incorrect. However, there’s one question they answer no other Bible podcast dares answer and frankly I play this portion at parties with my friends who are now reading parts of the Bible to debate our opinion on the matter more appropriately. That question (which episode I won’t mention so you’re forced to listen to multiple to find it) is this: which Gospel writers vape? I never imagined I’d honestly care if I knew or thought about this, but now that it’s been brought up, it’s literally my favorite thing. I also sometimes ponder which of Jacob’s 12 sons would vape and also, after careful consideration, I think it’s also worth exploring which Israelite kings would have an expansive collection of flavored Hyde’s or not. Obviously, you can listen to any Bible podcast but can you listen to one that asks these pressing questions? No, you can’t, and if you think you can, just stop trying and listen to this one exclusively, I don’t make the rules, God does.
  • ExFundie-Pro Reason & Logic
    Love this podcast!!!
I’m a former evangelical who has read the Protestant Bible multiple times while still a believer. After I left my faith in 2020, I was curious about all the other writings that didn’t make into the canonical Bible. I love that they give a brief historical context behind the various canonical and non-canonical texts. I also love the humor and non-believer perspective they bring to the podcast. This is my go-to podcast when cooking and cleaning!
  • joezoo
Never have I felt more seen by a podcast
As an apostate Southern Baptist with several semesters of ancient languages under his belt, who wishes to be more Bible-literate but whose comic-addled brain needs pop culture references to retain information, this podcast feels like it was made for me specifically. Bless these good Thunderson boys, and may no weapon formed against them prosper.
  • Pseudonatural
Essential listening for the secular history buff
Regular podcast in my rotation. I’ve learned a lot over the course of its run. The approach to religious material is respectful but not too serious, which is great. Benito is a very intelligent and well-educated scholarly guide while Chris injects humor and makes the material easier to understand by relating it with facets of pop culture and modern concepts.

    Angels and talking animals
I love this show and it’s simultaneously informative and hilarious. Treat yourself to the wild world of bible and bible adjacent literature. I’m still working on getting my cows to be a certain color though, I followed the instructions, but they keep winding up looking like their parents though. I must’ve missed something.

    What a delight
One of the few podcasts where I actually felt compelled to listen through their entire back catalog. I’ve really enjoyed listening to these two good boys talk through hundreds of hours of Bible and Bible Adjacent texts.
