Parenting #107

Productivity, Parenting, and Education for Moms with Adult ADHDAre you overwhelmed by the never-ending to do list of motherhood? Are you burnt out and barely keeping your head above water? Are you confused and frustrated by how all the other moms make it look so easy? And somehow you're still floundering despite trying even harder... Your purse is as overflowing as your mind, you never feel like a good enough mom, and you don't dare have anyone over to visit to witness your messy home. You just want the best for your kids, but you can't figure out how to manage the chaos, both in your mind and in your house.Oh, I've been there, mama. Some days, I'm still there. Parenting with ADHD is hard! We want to be structured for our kids, yet we can't seem to stay consistent even for ourselves. But I'm letting go of everyone else's perception of a "good mom" and stepping into loving who I am a little more each day. Will you join me?Whether you have ADHD like I do, or think you might, here is your permission slip to let go of the pinterest worthy visions of organization and structure fit for everyone else. Let's do life like our brains do life: creatively, lovingly, and with all your might. Moms with ADHD have a superpower of always trying their best, even when it doesn't pan out. How do I know? I have known about my ADD for over twenty years, and I want to share all of this hard-earned ADHD knowledge with you, making your adjustment a lot easier and faster than mine was. What does Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder look like in women? We'll dive into emotional regulation, motivation, executive function, hormones, medication, and natural treatments. Women with ADHD share their diagnosis stories with us, whether inattentive, hyperactive or combined, from childhood through adult diagnoses. We also talk about ADHD's so-called friends like depression, anxiety, addiction, disordered eating, other learning differences, and what I've learned through therapy and CBT. Science is my jam and learning about how our brains work through the lens of scientific research helps us understand who we are. ADHD is not just for little boys; it looks different in girls. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological medical condition, not an excuse for lazy, stupid, unmotivated people to not live up to our potential. Let's agree to throw that thought in the trash.Once we understand how our brains work, we can dive into the practical strategies like structuring our day, minimalism, money, nurturing our relationships, daily rhythms, using a planner, and improving our sleep. I want to help you build your version of a joyful family life.We talk about everything from ADHD to Zebras, because that is how Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder works: to us, our thoughts are clearly connected, but non-linear to everyone else. I want you to love being a zebra in a world full of horses. We were born as unique, gorgeous creatures, not meant to blend in with the usual nor mundane. When we embrace who we are and how our brains work, we can figure out how to live out lives successfully and in turn, lead our families well.At the end of the day, we just want to be good moms. Spoiler alert: you are already a great mom. If you're ready to see that with your own two eyes, hit play and listen in as we love ourselves a little more each day of our ADHD lives. ADHD does NOT mean you're doomed to be a hot mess, mama! You CAN rewrite your story from shame spiral to success story, and I'll be right here beside you to cheer you on!With love, Patricia Sung, a fellow mama with ADHDFree Resources and Transcriptions at: motherhoodinadhd.comConnect with Patricia Sung on Instagram: www.instagram.com/motherhoodinadhdJoin like-minded mamas in our Successful Mama Meetups online community: https://www.patriciasung.com/meetupSign up for community, courses, coaching, and tons of free resources to learn about ADHD: www.patriciasung.com

A safe place at your pace with success with ADHD
This podcast has provided me with more acceptance and appreciation for my ADHD diagnosis as I gotten better with strategies to management my ADHD and anxiety as a black woman and mother who adores being a out of the ordinary parent.

    Just advertising
Nothing but advertising for her program. I’ve listened to multiple episodes now and have learned nothing but when to sign up for classes. Disheartening for someone who needs help.

So many tips (and reminders to be kind to myself)
I laugh every episode because I see myself. This show helps me stop feeling alone and reminds me that I can do hard things (like paperwork).

    Always learning
I have been diagnosed with ADHD since I was in my 20s. I was just put on meds and continued bad habits, leading to self-medicating. Now, I’m sober and a mom with ADHD and other disorders. This has helped give me prospective, understanding, and informative. Glad I found this.

    I feel so seen
This podcast has been amazing for me! I am an undiagnosed mom with ADHD that is 37 years old and just listening to all of these things on this podcast have made me feel so seen and understood. It’s also helped me to feel more confident about myself, and that I am not just a hot mess. Even the intro saying spoil alert you are already a great mom just almost brings me to tears every time I listen to this podcast.

    Such a helpful podcast!
I just recently started listening to this podcast and I am so grateful for it. I appreciate that the episodes aren’t long and that Patricia breaks everything up into smaller topics. Just what my ADHD brain needs! I’ve been able to take away so many helpful tips in the last week. Thank you, Patricia!

5 stars for her knowledge and compassion
She’s doing such a service for moms with these challenges. She has truly been there and offers empathy and real solutions. However I agree with the other reviewer who is frustrated by the episodes that are essentially just commercials. I say this with love and respect and the hope that it’s not triggering any RSD. What would work for me better is a note saying something like, “Are you following the wrong leader? We’re diving into this question and how my online course can alleviate that problem”. Otherwise, I’m waiting for the commercial to be over, listen all the way to the end, and feel a little duped. A mention at the beginning and end are fine too, as she of course is running a business. Thank you, Patricia for all the learning and growth, I wish you all the best.

Phenomenal but going down wrong path
This show has been an absolute lifeline for me as a mom with undiagnosed ADHD. Patricia is one of the warmest, most intuitive podcast hosts I’ve ever encountered and I have felt seen and have learned so much going back through every single episode since I discovered the show. In the last few months, though, nearly every episode seems to be a sales pitch for the meetups or a course or coaching. I get that Patricia deserves to make a living off the value she brings to others but there are entire episodes where the sole message is join these meetups, take this course, over and over. Not everyone has the money or the bandwidth to commit to a formal program, however helpful it may be. Please, I hope this show comes back to its roots of bringing vital wisdom and support to women who are struggling. By all means, offer paid services and mention them but it makes me really sad to get excited when a new episode pops up and it’s just various rephrasings of “you need to join this group or sign up for coaching or do xyz.” 😞 I’m sure all the offerings are wonderful and maybe i’ll do one at some point but I really miss hearing Patricia’s insights in the podcast space.

    Invaluable
I love Patricia! The topics she covers are well researched. This podcast has been so helpful and relevant in my life. Things I don’t even know I need to know, I’m learning! Being a mother and wife are HARD, especially with an ADHD brain! This show has helped me be better for my family and for myself.

    Love, love, love!
Hard to put into words how this show makes me feel— seen, heard, UNDERSTOOD. I am instantly transported to a place where someone gets me and celebrates me for who I truly am— not who I’ve been trying to be. I’m reminded each time to give myself grace and love. The gentle way in which Patricia offers advice is so valuable in my life. I’ve implemented many things that I’ve gotten from this show and they’ve always produced the results I wanted. It doesn’t have to be so hard! Life doesn’t have to be so hard for us! I’m learning, thanks to Patricia, that motherhood is messy and our best won’t always look the same every day but we’re STILL amazing mothers. I truly am so grateful for her presence in this world. I look forward to what she has in store for us in 2023!

    New favorite podcast
What a fantastic podcast! As a mom of five kids, all of whom have ADHD, including my husband and myself, this podcast resonates with me so much. I just found it today but so far really love episode 158 about two ways we’re exhausted (yes to this!) and 159 with the examples of inattentiveness (I laughed out loud more than once because I can relate to 99.9% of what you shared.) You are a wealth of knowledge and I so appreciate that you get it and that you share so openly. Thank you for my new favorite podcast!

    Feeling Too BIG-ly
Thank you, Patricia, for reminding us that it is okay to feel our emotions BIG-ly!! Growing up with untreated ADHD, my over-sized emotions were so overwhelming and misunderstood. Rejection feels so awful — like a little piece of your soul is being stomped on. Thank you so much for sharing how a Mom with (treated & better understood) ADHD can teach her amazing ADHD kids that it’s okay to feel emotions BIG-ly too!!

    Tears!
I knew this was going to be a gift for me when I started crying during your intro. Just hearing you say that we’re already great moms hit me SO hard. I’ve constantly berated myself with how hard this journey has been. I only have one son (8 now) and I can’t imagine having another bc it’s so hard. I always say there should be a separate word other than hard to express the degree of HOW HARD it feels for me. Thank you for this podcast. It’s given me hope and I’m starting to feel less negative/less like a failure. That’s huge. You’re doing important work. Thank you for doing it.

Totally needed to hear this today
Thanks girl for breaking it down for me today. I needed to hear it. I just listened to episode 110 The real reason you aren’t hitting your goals as a mom and wow! I needed to hear it! Now I keep asking myself, why if I put it on my planner am I not doing it? What is going through my thoughts about this? It is helping me today with being intentional. Thanks!

    Motherhood in ADHD
Dear Patricia, wow! Listening to your podcast I feel so understood! I’m pretty new to the idea of ADD, ADHD affecting and being responsible for so many of my struggles. I’m undiagnosed but know that my husband has ADHD and am finally accepting that it is very probable I am as well. Looking to understand and improve myself with the knowledge and resources I think the Lord has led me to, including your podcast. Thanks so much!

    So helpful!
Patricia is my new friend in my head, I love this podcast. I’m not a mom yet but this podcast helps me get my home together even as a family of one person and two pets. It also tackles a major concern of mine; I didn’t know if I’d be fit to be a mom given my ADHD, but this podcast helps ease that worry. Thank you for this work. The compassion and intention behind it comes through with every word.

I love this podcast! The way you talk about ADHD as an asset has kept me in a positive place with it instead of feeling down. ❤️ I have spent my life feeling like I am falling short but with simple advice from here I feel like I can use my brain to my advantage!

Patricia makes me feel capable, smart, and proud of myself.
My ADHD coach recently recommended this podcast, and I couldn’t be happier with it. I trust Patricia because she uses real research to inform her podcast, and she makes me feel so incredibly uplifted with not only her positivity but also her vulnerability. I don’t feel alone. In fact, I feel smart and capable too. Just by calling me a “successful mama,” I already feel seen and appreciated and not known just by my struggles. Getting an ADHD diagnosis at 42 has been a beautiful awakening and understanding of who I am and why I do what I do. I have so much more compassion for myself now! And Patricia is helping me understand more about ADHD in a way that’s not clinical and also has authenticity since she herself has it. I don’t feel talked about—I feel like we are in this club together :) Also, I’m realizing that I’m not doomed to fail at everything I try because I can see someone else succeeding. Thank you so much for all that you are doing for others! Also, I really appreciate the lack of advertising and ads to skip through, although I totally understand why people need to incorporate those things. I’d still listen if this podcast had ads, but I’m glad it doesn’t! Again, thank you for sharing your gifts with the world.
