Alienating the Audience

189

Andrew Heaton and an army of nerds plunge deep, deep into films, books, and TV shows to ask: what's science fiction really about? What is The Twilight Zone really exploring? What are the underlying themes of Star Trek? What is the worldview of Star Wars? Also sometimes Heaton performs comedy on other planets.

Best sci-fi podcast this side of Vulcan
Best sci-fi podcast where the host is speaking from a horse. Slightly disappointed with how few lines the horse has though.

The longest hiatus of my life...
I was afraid this podcast had been canceled as Andrew focused on the political orphanage. I had all but given up hope, and then low and behold one day, 8 months later, I had a new episode in my que and I couldn't contain my excitement! Andrew and crew have brought hours and hours of great scifi content and discussion, and has caused me to expand my horizons about different authors, movies, etc. Can't wait for the new episode each week! Couldn't recommend highly enough! On a side note, I'd love to hear an episode on the trilogy of books Timothy zahn wrote as the original sequels to the first three star wars films! Would love to hear your perspective Andrew on them compared to the new trilogy Disney out out!

Rarely alienđź‘˝ating to me so far!
I enjoy this rarely alien👽ating podcast very much. When doing outdoor work then I often listen👂🏻to this podcast. I've only been uncomfortable with listen👂🏻ing to one episode so far, and even then I still liked that episode. Thank you Andrew Heaton for publishing this podcast.

    Your essential sci-fi “how-to” course
If you want to move beyond *just* popular sci-fi, this podcast will give you the introduction you need to explore the broad expanse of the genre. It’s fabulous.

    Awesome!
This is my absolutely favorite podcast. Looking forward to the next episode.

Glad to hear nerds go deep and pound a subject until exalted release.

    Great Podcast; Lots of Fun
This is a really enjoyable podcast with fun discussions about a variety of sci-fi topics. There’s a good mix of humour, philosophy, and analysis.

    Another great episode
Thank you, great episodes with awesome guests. Great B5 reference. Love that show.

    Best sci-fi podcast out there
While most sci-fi podcasts discuss the genera’s books and movies, ATA goes beyond that and explores the underlying science and social concepts. Smarter and funnier than anything else out there.

    Out of this World
...is just the kind of weak pun that I will never expect to hear on this podcast. I immediately fell in love with this show, for the light-hearted yet serious and sophisticated tone that it manages to strike. Also noteworthy that a lot of podcasts feature a post-guest segment as the host and partner/producer catch up and banter... this is often the weak point of such shows. In the case of this podcast, it’s often the highlight. Really enjoying every episode.

    John Varley episode? I’m in
I’m a fan of Mighty Heaton from the Twitter wars and when I saw he devoted a talk to Steel Beech and Varley’s exceptional work that was the intellectual equivalent to free tacos. I’ll be back

    Andrew Heaton delivers
This is one of my favorite podcasts. It's a perfect intersection of speculative fiction and philosophy, with a little bit of politics thrown in now and then. I have to skip episodes here and there to avoid spoilers, but it's also piqued my interest in scifi media I hadn't been interested in before - for example, I never had much interest in watching Star Trek, but after hearing a couple of discussions about the show on this podcast, I'm starting to change my mind.

    Heaton, Spice for the brain...
Andrew Heaton's science Fiction analysis -- political, economic, philosophical, historical -- makes your neurons flash like a drugged up Christmas tree, which is a good thing. I have to say, that I never listen to talk radio. I don't listen to pod casts, but I stumbled over Andrew Heaton's Libertarian humor and political analysis and was impressed. Being an avid science fiction fan, I now listen to his deep dives into science fiction. I jealously gaurd every moment of my time, so listening Heaton and his interesting guests traverse the multilayers and multiverses of science fiction has to be worth my time, and it is. I highly recommend Alienating the Audience.

    This is my Favorite Podcast
I’m in the middle of the Stargate episode and I love these people. If I could spend an evening hanging with this group my life would be amazing. The best part is, I’ve had that thought in separate episodes too! Thank you, Andrew, for being awesome at this. (And at the Political Orphanage)

Great Podcast for Vulcans and Autistics.
Don't want to stereotype but Spock-like listeners would love this podcast because it’s clever and they have interesting topics like what a ship might be comprised of if setting off to colonize a new planet. What I enjoy is that instead of simple conjecture, Andrew Heaton comes armed with actual smartypants information, so you learn stuff like some science guy’s theory of the maximum number of people you can have living in harmony before things get ugly. It’s among a handful of podcasts that I regularly listen to.

    Geek out, nerds!
Andrew Heaton is delightful. His deadpan humor and deep dive into Sci-Fi is educational, humorous & entertaining; it’s the trifecta of terrific.

    Thought Provoking
I was disappointed when AH appeared on Kibbe "Blaze TV" and stated his show was ending on same as I was going to listen to it. I was then thrilled when AH appeared on Kibbe again and one of the subjects was this podcast. I went right to iTunes and added the Podcast enjoying it over the holidays. The content is intelligent and thought provoking.

    Amazing topics
If you are interested in science fiction and want to hear a true aficionado discuss it, this is the place! Also, consider listening to "The Political Orphanage" if you'd like to hear about current events!

    Give it a listen
Not only does this have the best title of all podcasts, it has creat content too. You won’t be disappointed.

    Fun and thoughtful
This is a great podcast! It's witty and fun, and it offers a lot of interesting discussion for science fiction fans.

    Future Classic
The Political Orphanage is a delightful show, but this is the Heaton Podcast with staying power. Just as The Simpsons flowed from the Tracey Ullman Show, so too Alienating the Audience comes from The Political Orphanage: Your dentist recommends Viceroys. Camels pass the T-zone test. 20,679 Orion escapees say Alienating the Audience is less irritating—your throat is protected against irritation… I’m sure that last remark is referring to Heaton’s fondness for Scotch—It’s toasted.

If you haven’t heard his other podcast, check out “The Political Orphanage” for all those who enjoy a thick slice of politics, but without the drama smeared all over the entire.

May it Live Long and Prosper
I was already a big fan of Alienating the Audience when it was just a periodic segment of his other show, but as it’s own podcast it really shines as a delightfully nerdy weekly escape from the drudgery of normal life. Andrew clearly loves the genre, and his guests are top notch.
  • jimclyle
    Amazing!
There is finally a show that talks about what really matters.

    It's Great
Heaton is such a funny and clever guy and I just love the in depth a witty conversations he has about the genre, keep it up man, great work!

    Love the discussion.

    What I needed
I’ve listened to Andrew Heaton for a bit now and his enthusiasm about what he’s talking about keeps me listening. I also love when smart people can talk science fiction and get science fact (or theory) to work with it. Making the thing you love even more rad That person is Andrew and friends on this show

    So excited
Alienating the Audience was always my favorite segment on Something’s Off and The Political Orphanage, I’m so happy to see it launched as it’s own podcast. Heaton’s observations are witty and thought provoking, his guests are interesting and diverse in their opinions and backgrounds. I would give this podcast a 10/10 recommendation for any fans of science fiction, philosophy, or pop culture.

Heaton is THE Best Podcast Host
I was/am a fan of Something’s Off with Andrew Heaton and I’m thrilled to see him back again with this new podcast. Heaton has a special gift with interviewing and I love the discussions he creates. The fact that it’s now sci-fi, even better! Keep up the great work with this awesome podcast!
  • SamhainB
    This is fun
I’m having fun. Heaton and guests dissect the various worlds of sci fi and get into interesting conversations about the overarching philosophies that may or may not be driving their creators and it’s really great to listen to! Enjoying the debriefing of his intergalactic travels at the end as well! I rate it 5 Red Dwarves

Heaton in his element. Do not miss
As an avid sci-fi fan, I always listen to alienating the audience on my way to cash my weekly Glen Kevin distillery paycheck at people’s underwater bank. Andrew excels at diving into the deeper meanings of our favorite genres, and not taking it to seriously.
  • BJYaniz
    Smart and Nerdy
Since subscribing to this podcast I’ve woken each day to Andrew Heaton trying to serve me scotch. I don’t usually drink in the morning, but this smart, bearded, classically dressed man was so persuasive with his argument involving Battle Star Galactica, The Twilight Zone and Star Trek that I now gladly accept the morning scotch. After that first morning scotch I can no longer remember what his argument was, but it was brilliant in a very nerdy way.
  • Lievkiev
    Heaton does his best
Failed toaster insurance salesman and shill for the multi-purpose farm equipment lobby Andrew Heaton tries his hand again at pod-based discourse. He’s wrong about which episode of DS9 is the best and has a hard time with names from Dune. 8/10.

Unwavering Support for a Fine Program
Andrew Heaton lives in my garage, making his little radio plays with his friends or whatever. And while having him walk around my house referring to himself in the third person (and occasionally offering cigarettes to my kids) is fun and all, there’s nothing I’d like more than to see him succeed and be able to find a place of his own. Any place. Any place at all, really. So do as I’ve done and give this a five star review, people! And support him on Patreon, as well. I’m begging you. Seriously. Begging.

Really enjoy this podcast, episodes never last long enough, Heaton's skills are amazing, he makes nerdy topics funny and interesting and keeps his guests funny and on topic.

    Small town ferret talks good.
Folksy Oklahoman who previously combined politics and Dune references now has focused this talent just on Sci Fi deep dives for the middle aged- and it is glorious. Brought to you in part by glass bottom Chevys- which is the name of my new punk band.

    New World Heaton
The fourth best thing about Somethings Off has returned! Politics and sci fi!! Sure it may sound like a peanut butter and pickle sandwich but it is amazing. However I’m still not happy about that time Heaton stoke my lawn mower and returned it full of gas. My electric lawn mower. I’ll upgrade my review to six stars as soon as he replaces my mower.

    Enthusiastic Sci-Fi Fun!
Heaton’s humor and interviewing skills are put to great use in talking general sci-fi and exploring major themes in the genre. He gets some great guests and has just the most delightful conversations. High recommend!
  • Sounds like a Heaton
    Witty and relevant
Andrew threads the needle and makes us think. Like an ancient alien from Mars wearing an Indiana Jones professor costume. Feeding us facts and wit knowing they have no calories.
  • zombieLord15
The incredible Heaton does it again!
If you liked the political orphanage, civil convos about the issues and horse filled diners you are sure to love this podcast. it’s got heart, it’s got si-fi and it’s got Heaton!!!!!
