Cancel Me, Daddy

130

The pearl clutching about “cancel culture” and “censorship” has become louder and more absurd while also getting more and more play in the media. Journalists Katelyn Burns and Christine Grimaldi see this panic for what it is though: a grift. They take a closer look at these temper tantrums, dispelling myths, laughing at the most outrageous takes, and shedding light on which perspectives are actually being suppressed and left out of the conversation.

    Helpful and funny
I feel like I am living in podcast land, and my podcasts are divided into two things:TTRPG podcasts and insightful commentary on the world. Given that I am a huge advocate for trans people I thought I would check out this podcast with an awesome trans l journalist as a host, and I am very glad I did. I am really enjoying the show's way of taking on the issues. It took me a while to check it out because cancel culture language makes me roll my eyes... but it makes the hosts do that too, so I'm good

    Maybe they are good writers
I came to this show because of other podcasts I love, and I held out for awhile, but lately it feels like Katelyn Burns is phoning it in. Christine tries really hard to get Katelyn to bring something to the table in terms of researched analysis, but nothing comes, and it wasn’t until the Blake Lively episode where Katelyn had a lot of experience and knowledge that I had to quit the podcast, because it was was 30 minutes of nothing.

“Cancel Me, Daddy” is a must-listen for anyone tired of the surface-level debates around cancel culture and censorship. Katelyn Burns and Christine Grimaldi bring sharp, thoughtful analysis to every episode, pairing humor with constructive context that reframes these often-misunderstood topics. The guests are consistently top-tier, adding fresh perspectives and depth to the conversation. It’s insightful, well-researched, and often laugh-out-loud funny—a perfect balance of wit and wisdom. This is exactly the kind of podcast we need right now. Highly recommend!

    Glad to find you!
This podcast has been so fun and informative, so I was glad to see a bunch of new recent episodes I had missed. The hosts (old and new) are fantastic and the guests are always very on point. I needed this window to understand better, and I definitely feel like I’m having better conversations in my life because this podcast helped me know more about topics and people who are not heard as much. Thank you for providing so much joy and knowledge!

Hey there! I’ve been listening to this podcast for a while without knowing the locality. Great conversation about Simon’s Rock.

    Favorite new podcast
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast, especially following the election. It was a good pick me up-but it also was informative. Certainly will continue listening.

    First listen
I followed Kate on Twitter for years, and I finally got around to listening since Mike was in an episode- and I have been missing out! Such thoughtful and important discussions happening here. Thanks for this show.

    Sanity Protectors
Katelyn and Christine are the exact voices I need to feel sane lately. And they interview great people. If you are a depressed, aging millennial spending too much time online, like me, give it a listen!

    Informative, funny and thoughtful
I’ve been listening to this podcast for a while, and it has deepen my understanding of a variety of topics, and also kept me abreast of a lot of the the Internet culture that I simply don’t have time to follow anymore. I’m excited about the new direction that the pod is going in and I can’t wait to hear more!

Tackling tough topics with heart and a bit of humor
Love this show! It’s given me a lot of insight into current events, and I love the way Kaitlyn and Oliver speak truth to power. My only complaint is that I’ve managed to binge all the episodes, and now I want more!

    Totally rad pod
Absolutely wonderful podcast. Dark subject matter sometimes, but the hosts and guests really make the hard times just a little bit better. I would absolutely listen to this, especially if you’re a marginalized person. Podcasts like this always get a number of one star reviews that are just hateful.

Love the hosts, audio could be a little better
Love the hosts and the topics as well as the guest selection. Would love for for this to be eqd a little better, the transition music beeps are way louder than the hosts, and sometimes the host volume gets super loud, sometimes super quiet, just a bit hard to hear on car audio for instance (or it's blowing out your eardrums).

    Good idea, bad hosts
Great idea for a show… but the hosts speak in vague platitudes and don’t seem to really know any nuance or specifics about their critiques of the issues they’re critiquing. Would be a great show if hosted by more serious people.

    Don’t Just Yes the Guests
Have enjoyed some of the conversation, learned a little, but so often I’m wondering whether the hosts will ever push back or ask a hard question of a guest, any guest. I feel like I can hear them nodding along no matter the discussion. As a result, there’s no strength to their arguments at all and no reason to listen any more.

    as a disabled person
I get the episode about having hope and not being a doomed is important but as a disable person who was left to die during the pandemic and can’t access safe medial care…I am a doomer. communities have given up on disabled people and even the most left people have decided that back to normal is more important then disabled people. The only community I trust is the disabled one and we don’t hold much power in larger leftist spaces, in fact we’re excluded from so many ones. The left is playing into the rampant ableism that was being pushed by the right. Just my POV.

    Thoughtful discussion about relevant issues.
This is my new favorite podcast ! The two hosts are very intentional in their discussion about current topics, and also are funny and relatable. Katelyn and Oliver are very engaging and it is evident that they enjoy what the do !

    So grateful for this podcast.
I'm happy I have, once again, followed Michael Hobbes' footprints through Podcast World and found another incredible listen. I'm a handful of episodes in and already feel so nourished and educated by it. I'm looking forward to making my way through the catalog and learning more from these incredible people.

A must listen, subscribe, and support
If you’re a cis hetero human (like me), please do yourself and everyone else a favor, and listen to and support this show however you can. It’s incredibly thoughtful, educational, insightful, and funny. It’s been so helpful in unpacking and giving me language to better understand so called “cancel culture”, and so much more. Thank you, Katelyn and Oliver-Ash.

    Centering trans’ voices
Full disclosure—I’m a middle-aged, Cis-gendered, heterosexual, white lady. You know—the one whose voice is usually centered. I very much want to be an ally. So I love listening to these conversations. Having your perspectives, experiences, thoughts, etc elevated and heard is so important. Kaitlyn and Oliver, thank you so much for this podcast!

    Entertaining, Informative, Nuanced
I just came across this podcast recently and it immediately became one of my favorites. The hosts are funny and entertaining but also clearly take the topics seriously and with extensive thought and consideration. I will definitely be recommending this podcast to friends!

    Entertaining & Informative & Trans!
This is one of the few podcasts my brain is able to pay attention to very easily. I love both of the hosts, Katelyn is like the societally literate aunt I never had and Oliver is that epic cousin teeming with autistic swag. I also like how the show has a lot of trans people as guests, because even when they are explicitly talking about transness, it’s really nice to hear more from my community and hear how existing as a trans human in this world affects people’s perspectives about unrelated issues.
  • Mjk1328
    You are wonderful
Please know, I do not write these. I generally do not human all that well. I graduated from UMass Amherst with a BA in English in ‘98 because I didn’t know what the heck to do & I liked to read. I’ve always felt kind of meh about it. I thought I heard Katelyn say she’d gone there & it may have been just a class or something or I may have misheard but I truly felt proud. Oh & shout out because I also got a degree from one of the MA 15 community colleges too. :) (QCC) You both are a gift. You make me smile. Thank you. Another Meg

I was so excited about this topic, but I couldn’t make it through the first episode I listened to. One of the hosts said “like” about ten times in the first minute.

    Refreshingly Real
When discourse gets so nutty it makes you question your own sanity, this show digs into and speaks up for reality. Also, it’s always good to find a podcast staffed by real people. This is absolutely why podcasting exists.

    Michael Hobbs Diva of Disinformation
I’m so disappointed to hear Michael Hobbs say the Depp/Heard trial was “literally a cut and dry case of a man abusing a woman” and go on to apparently invent evidence that doesn’t exist and otherwise spin his own invented version of why the jury made the wrong decision. He obviously has an ideological obsession that is sadly shared by many who decided to ignore the evidence (or lack of same) that made this trial so important. Yes it’s messy. No it’s not at all proven that Depp did any of the things Heard accused him of. She has no witnesses and literally cooperated with TMZ to make a very public case against Depp —while she was suing him for a divorce settlement. Whether or not anyone likes it this was not a Me Too moment—and Depp attempting to correct the damage done to him doesn’t undermine the Me Too movement. Hobbs obviously thinks it does. And he’s literally made a fool of himself by planting a flag for AH where she couldn’t prove a flag even exists. Depp doesn’t have to be a sweet puppy, either. But he doesn’t deserve to go down in flames simply because right wing INCELs are having a gotcha moment over this. If anything people need to realize that there’s a reason the court of public opinion is a mess—and that’s the problem for this entire sad episode. Depp wasn’t able to defend himself and Heard never got vetted or had to prove anything. She just used TMZ and a few friends who have now disavowed her and feel manipulated and conned by her. She claimed she thought Depp was killing her more than once but she never called the police. She never went to a doctor. And a lot of people came forward to testify against her —but only her sister and a paid expert came forward for her. I don’t like that this happened any more than anyone else. But I don’t think it does Me Too or victims of abuse any good to let someone’s lies go unchallenged. And again, that’s the fact of this; Depp was literally fired and dropped by the industry (he hasn’t worked since this happened) based on what AH said about him. No one checked the story. No one went to court. The story was believed and accepted without investigation. And Depp lost his career. Now he’s gone to trial and this verdict reflected the facts. She couldn’t prove anything and in fact was proven wrong in her assertion that no one would believe him if he told the truth about their marriage.

    Great Show!
The hosts are wonderful & very entertaining.

    Amazing!
Great show & lovely hosts! I’ll be honest that I was wary to listen since I don’t trust the algorithm since it keeps recommending me a bunch of shows hosted by CISHET bros. My initial reaction was that I cannot listen to anymore white cishet bros talking about owning the libs. But then I noticed that Michael Hobbes was a guest and realized that I WAS WRONG ABOUT CANCEL ME DADDY! Now I’m obsessed with this show.
  • Only Sane Floridian
I blame Michael Hobbes for bringing me here.
Love everything he does but unfortunately this interviewer is uninformed, has a terrible speaking voice, and also thinks the word “exacerbate” is pronounced “exasperate”. Why do you have a podcast?
  • ashze12
    Unmatched
I was hesitant at first, but it’s an incredible podcast with amazing insight! Topics are well planned and researched. Very refreshing perspectives. Hosts are fantastic speakers with a wealth of knowledge and experiences that are unmatched in other podcasts. Despite this, they’re still very funny and down to earth, and can turn some pretty heavy info into something light and digestible.

    Funny, Timely, Expansive
I am one of a few who first was introduced to this through Mike Hobbes (“You’re Wrong About,” “Maintenance Phase,” and the “moral panics correspondent” for this podcast); I’m really grateful for that introduction and have so enjoyed working through the back catalogue of episodes from there. If it seems weird to go back into old episodes that were tethered to current events of the time, well, who cares, it’s great anyway — you’ll learn a lot you might have missed the first time around and will definitely see issues highlighted that were largely ignored at the time. Beyond the material itself—and fantastic guests, including and far beyond Hobbes—the show is filled with funny digressions, personal asides from the hosts, and a welcome respite from everything else happening in grim times. It’s smart and a joy; check it out if any of the above seems of interest to you!

    great hosts and guests
Fans of You’re Wrong About or Maintenance Phase should check this out! Though the topic of cancel culture may seem specific, this podcast illuminates numerous aspects of technology and radicalization. I consider this such an important podcast for trying to understand what is going on and how we got to this scary point in history.
  • Heyyyyyaaaaaaa
Get off your step ladder, Hobbes
I know it goes against the liberal core that a woman could lie about abuse but it happens every single day. Your two cents is way off.

Great insights into the creeping grift
I love this podcast! The hosts offer important insights into the many ways that right-wing/conservative forces are playing the victim while causing actual harm to the left—especially marginalized individuals—as a way to maintain power and make money. I appreciate the LGBTQ focus and the ways that the hosts’ personal experience and expertise cut through the typical media nonsense.

    Engaging & Fresh
This show is like sitting in a discussion with your friends where you can all let out a collective laugh-sob-scream about the state of the world. Oliver and Kaetlyn’s dynamic is equal parts warm, intelligent, and thoughtful, while demanding critical engagement with media figures and political exploitation, a deeper examination of how culture is twisted to suit the needs and interests of the powerful, and how we can support one another in this timeline. Highly recommended.

    mediocre minds
listening to this podcast is like being trapped with the people no one wants to talk to at the party. whiny, everything they dislike is a disaster, every existence of someone who does not think or behave exactly like them is renounced with religious intensity. but mostly boring, lazy, unremarkable. you could get the same takes from a hundred tweets. these people don’t really have anything to say, and they’re the last ones to notice. jk they’ll never notice.

I love this podcast, they made me think about things differently. They are incisive and hilarious but never mean-spirited. Also in my opinion Katelyn’s adorable cat should make some more cameows

hotter than beanies babies and a better investment
Whether one has no clue what Cancel culture is or simply has been curious about trending snippets, I recommend this podcast. It's informative, and entertaining with solid discussion. The conservative outrage machine might be an attempt to dissuade marginalized groups from requesting accountability. I feel this is similar to respectability politics. Three ring circus aside may Cancel me, Daddy have a long and promising run.
