Matt is true steward of the sport of fly fishing
Hallowed waters is one of my favorite podcasts. Unlike other fly fishing podcasts, Matt is most interested in educating his audience and sharing his love of the sport’s history and connection with the natural world. His shows are about sharing his passion, not about selling his brand.

The Gold Standard of Fly Fishing podcasts
Matt, I just finished listening to your podcast with Dec Hogan. I was moved to tears!!!!! You made me homesick. I’m on the wrong side of the lake for Skamania now and getting humbled by Wisconsin spring creeks. Your podcast is amazing ( best in the business ). Thank you for bringing a passionate and intelligent program with world renowned experts and innovators. The Dude-Bro fly fishing podcasts are a dime a dozen. Hallowed Waters is the standard. I wish you the best my friend.

Updated 2024: Regrettably came back and DLed an episode featuring a friend and got even more annoyed at the rambling, interrupting host who doesn’t let guests get a word in edgewise. Stars are solely for the guests, their content, and the sound quality. Previous review from 2023: I deleted the episodes I thought I wanted to listen to because the host goes on huge, wild tangents and inserts needless political nonsense into episodes. For Pete’s sake, let the guests talk and stop interrupting and talking over them!!!!!!!! The verbal diarrhea makes abundantly clear that Matt doesn’t use or stick to show notes. The two stars I’ve levied is for excellent sound quality and the expert level of guests. The final turnoff: Matt’s efforts to recognize women anglers and be inclusive in his language was completely canceled out by the inappropriate FLIRTING/remarking about attractiveness to his female guest. Super gross. 🤮

I just started listening to Hallowed Waters and I can’t get enough. There are a range of interesting topics and discussion shared that digs deep into this sport and there is always something to be learned. I particularly enjoyed the 4 part series on the Catskills and the guests they brought on as they are in my opinion among the most respected and knowledgeable people in the sport including the host. As a bug nut and dry fly enthusiast and someone that makes a couple trips to the Delaware system every year this was my favorite series so far. Highly recommended and looking forward to more! Adrian

    Plight of Atlantic Salmon
A wizard on water and a poet in podcast. Matt you always do such a masterful job explaining the complexities of all things fish/fly/environment. Your recent podcast on the plight of Atlantic Salmon was extremely inspirational. My new found love of fly fishing has taken a more intentional approach to conservation of these beloved watersheds. Keep up the great work, you sharing your body of knowledge helps motivate up and coming fly anglers. Well done !

Authentic in a world of plastic
Not only is this a great podcast with quality guests for us who chase trout and the passion of fly fishing but overall I am grateful for a show that isn’t over produced. It’s raw and authentic. Matt is himself and he doesn’t try to fit the narrative of anyone else. Refreshing! Keep up the awesome work!

    Hallowed Waters Episodes In General
I have been really enjoying the Hallowed Waters Pod Casts. I like the way Matt is interviewing the present Fly-Fishing Professionals and also pays tribute to the past Fly-Fishing Professionals as well! The information is very informative. I often find myself taking notes on subjects discussed, a book that was mentioned and/or a specific technique. I have sent Matt questions on podcasts subject matters that were mentioned, and his response(s) are returned promptly. I highly recommend listening to these Pod Casts as I am certain you will find a specific area that interests you or just listen to something for general purposes…. And you might learn something as well!

    Unique offering
I appreciate the wide spectrum of topics and guests presented on Hallowed Waters. Yes, there are times Matt can be especially verbose, but it comes from his passion and curiosity, and the fact that he’s wildly extroverted. It’s a rare thing for there to be long-form conversations that bring modern perspectives juxtaposed with foundational texts and concepts, and the fact that we have that here is something I am very thankful to Matt for creating.

    Idea is great
The idea of the podcast is great and so are the guests but the host rants constantly. Let the guests speak and limit the pointless tangents and politics

I’m new to the art of fly fishing.. The zen of all that fly fishing entails and this is a greatly informative podcast rich with content and the pursuit of living full in the moment of the fly. Great job greatly appreciate your work! Your turning me from the dark side of steelhead & salmonoids to the art and zen of the fishing the fly , understanding the pursuit of the highly sought after brown trout and the history behind the elusive trout! I feel more at home knowing there are likeminded groups out there looking to persevere our natural resources and keep them alive! Much love, Kyle
