NOCTURNAL

105

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Scott Sigler comes a tale of murder, madness, and an unspeakable evil lurking beneath the streets of San Francisco.San Francisco homicide inspector Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain his dreams, dreams that mirror — with impossible accuracy — gruesome murders drenching the city in blood? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him? Not disgust, not horror, but excitement. As Bryan and his longtime partner Pookie' Chang investigate the killings, they learn that things are even stranger than they initially seem. The victims are all enemies of an ostracized teenage boy, a boy gripped by the same violent, prescient dreams that haunt Bryan. When Bryan and Pookie dig deeper, they uncover disturbing details of a mysterious cult known as “Marie’s Children,” and of San Francisco’s secret history of serial killers, a history that their superiors — from the mayor to the police chief and on down — seem desperate to keep hidden. Featuring a dazzlingly plotted mystery and a terrifying descent into a nightmarish underworld -— along with some of the most incredible action scenes ever told and an explosive, gut-wrenching conclusion you won't soon forget — NOCTURNAL is a spectacular outing from one of the horror genre's brightest stars.CREDITS:Presented by Empty Set EntertainmentWritten by Scott SiglerNarrated by Phil GiganteDirected & Engineered by Corey YoungPodcast production assistance by Allie Press and Evo Terra of Simpler Media Productions (Simpler.media)For more audio fiction from Scott Sigler, please visit ScottSigler.com

Look up the narrator. Weird choice for this story.

    Some good, some bad
The story has a lot of good details, but get dumber as it goes on. But several of the characters, like Brian, are superficial and one dimensional. Not believable; annoying. Also, while the narrator does a good job, the female voices are bad, and the affectionate emotional stuff is cringy.

    Too x rated for me
Too much talk about erections. Made me uncomfortable and couldn’t listen at home or work. Disturbing.

    Good story
The story is good, but some of the writing is insensitive, specifically with the use of the R and N word 🙄

    ABSOLUTE CLASSIC
Very Dark and disturbing but terribly entertaining…totally draws you in. Wonderful storyline with great character development. It had the perfect balance of horror and humor of the origin story of a complex anti-hero. The podcast is flawlessly narrated. I had to remind myself that it was one person narrating the book. Definitely one of those stories good enough to listen to again.

    It’s the characters
I don’t care if you’re into horror or not. Maybe you like period true crime or historical fiction… don’t matter. These characters stick. These are memorable characters you just “know”. You can hear them. You would recognize them on the street. Solid story telling, great plot, and some wonderful characters…

Buddy cop movie meets messed up monsters inc.
Love this book! It really takes the buddy cop genre and takes it on a killer (pun intended!) tangent into monsters and bloody mayhem

    Did Not See That Coming
This is a great book. It as well developed characters. A good balance between mystery, action, horror, and humor, hello Pookie. But the thing I liked best about it were the unexpected plot twists and reveals that really helped put this story over the top. You may think you know what is coming but you don't. I read and listen to a lot of books and it hard to fine ones that supporise me in a good way, but Nocturnal does. I highly recommend this book.

    Wonderful!
The streets of SF become a nightmarish landscape of monsters and murders! Beware Marie’s Children, beware the Ninja, oops, I mean the Terminator, and most of all beware the Chang-Bang
  • Jvizcarra
    Super-powered C.H.U.D. !
Nocturnal describes itself as a buddy-cop movie mixed with Hellboy. That's a pretty good description of this latest book by Scott Sigler. The fourth of his books from Crown, this is another refreshing new story that combines hard (and complicated) science with fantastical creatures. This story is a longtime favorite of his fans, and Scott assured his followers that this new telling of the story was largely different from the original. He was right. The story has been expanded on and improved, yet remains easy to zip through, as each chapter leaves you hanging for what happens next. No matter what you may have thought of the story previously, you owe it to yourself to see how much more mature it has gotten. Nocturnal is full of great characters; the police force and its support network of medical examiners and forensic specialists, informants with the most ridiculous combination of handicaps you can think of, long time police partners, and the newest cast of offshoot mutants that only come out at night. Don't be too intimidated by the science; it gets pretty heavy in one part, but the rest of the story flows like a chocodile on a hot summer day.

    Awesome story!
Great supernatural story based in SF with creatures living under the city. A super power hero combating with the creatures to maintain the status quo between the two worlds. Sigler at his best, it’s what made him famous!

    Great audiobook
A great audiobook from a great author. I loved it, and will listen again!
  • Joker junkie
    This story is horrifically AMAZING!
This story is full of entertaining protagonists and cringeworthy antogonists. The amazing thing is that you don't really know which is which until the end! Sigler puts the science in his science fiction, and weaves in horror for good measure. This book ties in to many other stories in the Sigler-verse. You will want to keep listening to learn all you can about Marie's Children and the mysterious man in black!
  • Renbro02

Superb blend of Street and Strange
Scott Sigler earned his following by consistantly producing superb content. When Nocturnal first dropped I was wary because it took an unusual turn but shortly after is came around to show me the goods. New setting, new story, same hig quality storytelling. Monsters lurk among us, below us, and mostly remain unseen. Mostly...
