BritishphileExcellent podcastWonderful juxtaposition of history and politics. Past and present. This podcast took you places you weren’t expecting to go and it was pure delight to listen to.

Laurel ElainaSeason 2?In light of recent news from the start of 2025, The United States may be ready to hear a second season of The Last Resort. A good way of expanding the second season from the first season would be to explore the possibility of other states ceceding, and to look into how complete decoupling from the flawed health/health insurance system of the US might improve the health system overall in the territories affected. Silicone Valley is also alienating itself with the rise of AI, and most Americans outside of corporations protesting against it. A discussion of California’s eucalyptus problem might also be worth talking about.

la macro guyMissed opportunityIt’s ok for a documentary style podcast to have a viewpoint but this was extremely one-sided. Fascinating topic. Too bad it missed.

Skuta71Seriously?😆🤣😆

Speedster fan 356Totally cluelessWhether estate is red or blue, there’s always both red and blue voters in each state to assume everybody in California California votes, the same way thanks the same way Is ridiculous How one person’s fantasy becomes a podcast would be a better title.

Cal XPatLEAVE!Totally Leftist point of view spin. I would be ecstatic if CalExit happens. Once the jewel of America, CA is going down the drain. The failed one party state policies only brings misery, exacerbates crime, extreme taxes, cost of living and out of control homelessness while rolling out the red carpet to illegal immigrates and your freeloaders. Keep conveniently aborting your babies… Keep blaming climate change for seasonal calamities occurring for centuries. Bye bye

BlackDog967DishonestYou are one of the problems. You lied when you stated ‘on Jan. 6th, 2021 armed, far-right extremists stormed the capital…’ Totally discredits what could have been an interesting podcast.

moshe mayerWaste of timeWhiny, self righteous and insufferable.

ViviFZ03Answer to ur what if?It becomes an impoverished, dirty, filthy, run down, graffiti gang land meets mad max, meets wild, wild west. Its already halfway through there, California is the problem not the everyone else, CA has been doing it’s own thing for decades now and look what it’s become? When I was a kid people came from other countries to visit California, today? Nobody wants to come here, they are all trying to get out. Hollywood is a filthy, scary place, can’t even see the stars on the walk of fame if not for dirt, for the homeless sleep or overdosed on them. Beverly Hills rodeo dr, gets robbed at gun point every other week, our beautiful beaches are toxic and dangerous and more homeless. They are all whiny, self entitled lazy immoral brats. Ca will be swallowed by the sea.

Argh hootedInteresting subject, insufferable writingDon’t know what more I can say. I’m sure things the presenter has gone through justify the writing, but it’s so insufferable. I get Trump is scary. I get America has done and continues to do horrible things, but all the hand wringing about that takes up so much of the episodes I could get through that I was left wondering is this podcast really about Cal Exit and its founders or is it just an anti Trump anti imperialism anti right wing diatribe? And, let’s be clear, I’m fine with a podcast about all those things, but I downloaded these episodes to listen to a podcast about Californians efforts to secede. Listen at your own risk.

TedSniSecede from fed gov bailouts? What exactly would cali seceding accomplish, it’s all grand standing. For the longest the common sense US was hoping Cali would slide into the sea (or be gone).

librarylady87Junk … don’t waste your timeUnbelievable garbage. This is the biggest waste I’ve ever listened to. What a joke!
-
D’Isaiah T’Billings-ClydeTerribleThat’s about 30 min of my time I won’t have back. Uneducated activist and woke nonsense
-
Thunder PlumBadScattered and superficial. No real insight here into the political dynamics surrounding this discredited, whacky political movement.
-
tommywins1Hypocrisy from the leftOh boy! A podcast from a violent, corrupt and crime ridden city talking about how great their city is! A city covered in a dome of smog from pollution telling us about climate change and how it’s our fault. I wish they’d leave, but they never will because any other country in the world would throw them in jail.
-
womensclubhouseNew fresh thought from the fringes of societyI liked this presenter, who offers a barely-polished and authentic view of California and includes a group we don’t often hear from (in English at least), native Mexicans.

B3asyTerribly one sided propagandaThis is trash
-
Sally HardestyJournalists should be invisibleNot really interested in the hosts musical background or story. Started out great but became self indulgent. This happens too often these days.

JennJenn81EnthrallingI am such a fan of history and civics. This podcast was thoroughly entertaining and I am very curious to see what happens next in the Cal exit movement. It would be awesome if there was a season two from you guys that talked about other things great job!

Nazir78Good Entry Point into CalexitThe show covers broad strokes into some of the many factors, historical backdrop and potential implications of what a secession would look like. A couple of things I want to remark on some of the reviews. Some of the one star reviews clearly show trolling behavior. Those “people” didn’t even listen to the show, but through their bias gave it a one star review in aims to sway others from listening. The shows offers personal interviews from the people behind the calexit movement. It’s meant to be a character study and offer some perspective on the motivations of the people, along with his own, on what Californians feel about calexit. Including conservative AND liberal takes. Yes, the narrator is of indigenous background, musician and activist. He mentions it in the first show and makes mention of production credits at the end of each show, which if you know about documentaries and shows, give production credits to those involved. Not sure why others “complained” about that. Yes, it isn’t a thorough overview of every single line item of calexit. The narrator makes mention that content surrounding the very particulars already exists. This show is meant to offer a personal take, into the social backdrop and the motivations of the people behind the movement. Yes, there is sprinkle of personal views AND facts. The narrator does not try to hide that. He also sites his sources within the shows so you know where he is getting his info from. The show is a nice springboard into this fascinating and divisive subject matter. Well done.
-
schuyler007surprisingly - and delightfully - excellentI started listening to this series, because I am vaguely interested in the Cal Lexa issue – but was surprised - and frankly hooked! - by the breath and depth of the reporting. So many unexpected issues and historical twists and turns. Bravo. Xiuhtezcatl is an unusual and very skilled host - and their music an added bonus.
-
msmezmanNice researchI appreciate how separate threads were woven for this interesting narrative. Nicely done
-
nikenamenytPoor hostThey need someone else to host and this current person needs a producer because his music is really lacking.
-
kellyo3Wasted potentialGreat topic, third rate delivery and so many commercials!
-
Jason E L.Complete and ComprehensiveAppreciate that could have been a simplistic takedown of the Calexit debacle was instead a hard look at water rights, political proportional representation, indigenous history, and even an examination of the narrowness of 'freedom' that supporters of succession movements believe in.
-
blackphillypInteresting Premise, not the best executionI enjoyed the story being told, but did feel it was let down by the host’s attempts to center the narrative around himself (ie by promoting his music career or his activism barely tangential to the states topic). I can see what the host was aiming for by incorporating stories about native activism, water wars, land back movement and so on, but the connections to CalExit were just far too tenuous for a coherent narrative. The host is focused on activism for climate justice and issues affecting indigenous people, and he used every chance to discuss CalExit in light of those concerns while barely addressing the much more central and immediate issues of military bases, currency and so on. It felt like the host has a set of topics he wanted to discuss and sprinkled them into an otherwise unrelated and fairly linear story of the CalExit movement. I’d give it a pass

JordanTheHostSelf absorbed and ad riddenSo, as one of those people in the Deep South that Californians continue to talk about with such intense derision without ever visiting or attempting to know or understand, this podcast is as hurtful as the rest. It’s like listening to MRAs. Sure, there’s valuable feedback, but it always comes with this pointed cruelty toward another group. It’s ugly. It’s bad rhetoric. Also, good journalism should remain neutral. The journalist should be invisible. This host takes the first episode to go on about his activism and cultural heritage, which is fine in a podcast about ones activism and cultural heritage, but I was led to believe this would be about something larger than one person. Alas, another selfish and ad ridden podcast designed to get listeners to participate in another circle jerk.

David Plettner-SaundersThoughtful, informative and wiseWe’ll worth the investment of time to learn about California’s separatist movement. Host Xiuhtezcatl presents thorough investigative journalism with themes of freedom and conflict. What starts out as a story about how and why some Californians want the state to become an independent country becomes a deeply thoughtful argument for facing our differences and remaining in community. His conclusion is rooted in indigenous values and experience.
-
edrchux,37111Please doI am fully supportive of California seceding from the US. Good riddance.
-
TsnavComplete garbage! For starters, the folks that put this podcast together need not waste a second in firing the “fact checker”! Beyond that, the only people more supportive of California leaving the union is EVERY OTHER PERSON IN THE COUNTRY!
-
Will_I_Am1974Well….Bye!Sounds like a great idea to me….y’all go!
-
robitussnHope this gets better…ep1I just finished the first episode. I want to hear what this show’s description promises…but the first episode turned into an advertisement for the host’s music career and a pitch into him as a celebrity. Hopefully they just stick to the story of Cal-exit and not trying to create another figure in the activist industrial complex
