Senses Working Overtime with David Cross

I’m Bon Vivant, and professional talker, David Cross. I’ve been talking professionally for well over forty years. I’m good at it. I truly love a conversation that follows no specific linear train of thought but can start about the 2004 Red Sox and minutes later has become an in-depth look at the Iran/Contra hearings (with a detour about the best breakfast tacos in Austin). Whatever, as long as the conversation is funny, edifying, and real.

This podcast began as a vehicle for guests to explore the Best/Worst/Funniest/Saddest/Most Beautiful etc. things they’d ever Seen, Touched, Tasted, Smelled, and Heard. Somewhere along the way this became a loose premise, a jumping off point to learn more about my guests, and I let the conversations steer themselves.

    Great Show
David’s show is like your viewing him and his guest having coffee. Even though I don’t know who a lot of his guests are I still enjoy the banter.

Cross is crass and that’s ok with me
Or maybe he’s not and just being David Cross? I like when Cross is crass, whether it is real or a joke. I think it’s a joke. Life is a joke. A cruel joke. I hate Trump.

Be a man and invite your former best friend on the show..imagine the conversation you and Gavin would have!

    Calm down Cross
I like David Cross, but his interrupting Josh Johnson got to the point I noticed and then was annoying. Josh would be grooving in a lucid flowing thought and David would break to make a seriously unformed thought that was completely unnecessary.

    Host is insufferable
Zero comedy just a nonstop insufferable fool with pointless stammering over every word. Came for mark normand and left bc the host is talentless.

    Is he just miserable?
Listened to the episode with Mark Normand. Expected some sort of great banter between these two. Mark is just a funny, easy going guy … did not expect David to be a pissy little brat towards him , analyzing his answers and God forbid he farted ( he knows Mark is like this from “We Might be Drunk” podcast) I think David is jaded and comes off hypercritical to guests.

    Original/entertaining
Some episodes tickle my funny bone more than others. Understandably, comedic minds and comedy adjacent types doing a podcast hangout can’t be expected to have you rolling around with laughter. This is a genuinely light-hearted and funny podcast. I’m a fan of David Cross, and my fandom is unconditional. I have so much respect for David. Give this show a listen.

    Learned that
Yo, each show has been really good with some even great. Genuine hearty laughs with guests you just meet or old long time drinking buddies (non-gendered use of buddies). Thanks for helping me find The Cavedogs, as I’d never heard of them in my youthful travels but they are now.

    Just perfect…
It’s David Cross, he’s one of the greatest comedians that’s ever comedian-ed. I like that he does this his way and that’s what makes it stand out among the bajillion other pods out there/here/wherever they are… the tubes that connect the web of internets.

    Why do it
It just seems like the host doesn’t want to be there.

Guy is a total self important tool but I enjoyed Robby Hoffman making him seem like the putz he is.

    Very Funny Wit
Very funny podcast! David can talk about serious matters, but also carry on a dry-witted improv bit for shockingly long. I've enjoyed every guest, except for Robby Hoffman who seems very selfish and antisocial. But I David did a good job checking her nonsense while keeping it funny! Keep up the good work!

    Big fan, but…
Look forward to David’s podcast, but if I’m interrupted by something and want to go back to where I was, it won’t let me and doesn’t work at all. Very frustrating! Is this a Headgum issue? I’m missing your content because of it. I’d like a fix.

    Disconnected from reality
As a fan of David Cross for many years it was weird to tune into a podcast hosted by David that I didn’t like. Most of his interviews feel jaded and I genuinely can’t tell if he’s doing a bit or is truly miserable in this format. Especially in the Zach Woods interview. Personally I found most of the conversations uncomfortable and somewhat narcissistic.

David mostly talks about himself with occasional Guest input
Love David Cross, I love so many of his guests, I was super excited for this, but after listening to about 15 episodes, I realize that the vast majority of every episode is David reminiscing with only occasional input from the guests. Only a few times was a guest able to hold their own and talk much. I really wanted to like this more than I do.
  • rosemarym417
    🤔
I’m 30 min into the Zach Woods episode and all I’ve heard is traumatic stories about David’s dad…? Some episodes are so fun and funny but this one (so far) sounds like a therapy session and the guest is the therapist 🥴 nothing wrong with talking about it but why have a guest if you aren’t going to ask them a question ?
  • DrChugClamato
David Cross fan but a bit of a bummer
The episode with him nonchalantly talking about eating a dog kind of sums up the vibe. I love David Cross’ comedy. Always have. There are definitely gems and interesting characters. Sometimes it seems a bit phoned in but also a bit bleak. Not in a Marc Maron esque way where there is something human and vulnerable in those dark moments. Rather, it seems disassociated and terse. Someone described this as easy listening. Sometimes it is, as whole it isn’t. The comedy and joy is great when it’s there.
  • Amba678953
Considering he might be THE funniest guy around…
…it could be better. Sometimes David seems to be dripping with resentment and bitterness. I understand life is tough and unfair, but that’s why I’m tuning into a comedian’s podcast- to be distracted by a little levity. I’m super not interested in feuds, who’s a good or bad celebrity friend, which show biz executives gave David a bad deal. I don’t think he cares what I think… and it kinda shows.

    My Fave!
Very easy to listen to and feels like you’re just chit chatting with an old friend. Not literally an old friend but figuratively old. And probably literally old too but beards make ages hard to judge. I don’t think he’s that old but then again what’s old to me is maybe not old to you. And it’s a podcast so I’m not actually seeing him to judge his age anyway. Just listen and enjoy!
  • Bon044
    Constructive feedback
I absolutely love David Cross and his chosen guests. At times I feel like I am hearing more about our host than the guest though, so it would be nice to have a little more reciprocated conversation. Still love David Cross’s humor and I look forward to every podcast!

David cross is by far my favorite
Can’t believe he did a podcast but I’m so glad he did. And he’s right the “Hook” is stupid.but he was forced to use one and so glad he ignores it.

    Fantastic Podcast
This is so enjoyable, the natural improv is outstanding and very entertaining
  • SpeedyGrayRaucous
    I absolutely love this podcast
And mainly because it’s David having his friends come and listen to him telling them stories about himself! Do I know anything about H. Jon Benjamin that I didn’t know before? Well I know that he a David worked on a animated show together and they went to a baseball game and Vegas and David had a birthday party that Jon went to! But who care? It’s still funny and fun.

    Impure joy and laughter!
Such a funny and entertaining podcast. A little off-kilter and you have to have a brain to appreciate. If you’re a fan of David Cross you will get it.

    Omaha Steaks
Listening to Cross read the Omaha Steaks advertisement stopped me from fast forwarding through it. Money well spent Omaha.

    Like a delicious roasted chicken
Years ago when I happened to see him grocery shopping in the Key Foods on Avenue A, I thought now there’s a guy who should have a podcast when they get invented. And now he does. You’re welcome.

I want to love it but…
I want to love this podcast, but so much of it is unlistenable. The entire Fred Armisen episode is a prime example. The “far away from the mic pretending we’re not doing the podcast yet” bit is unlistenable from an audio quality standpoint and from a content standpoint. I can’t understand anything if I’m listening in my car and it’s just quite tedious. Once the podcast gets rolling it’s usually pretty good and interesting but the first 10-20 minutes is sometimes just a total throwaway and it doesn’t make me want to keep listening.

    David Cross is Great
I love hearing David in this setting, speaking casually with friends, sometimes pure comedy (as with Odenkirk or Bateman) and sometimes just good conversation with no pressure to garner laughs. After briefly meeting him on tour, the guy is really genuine and that comes out in this podcast. I highly recommend it.
  • Golden dude
One of my all time favorite comedians
Odenkirk killed it. I’ve re-listened to that episode quite a few times. Awesome show overall
  • Grooling
    Amber Tamblyn
Just listen to this episode. They seem like me and my wife. Sometimes I dress as David and make my wife dress as Amber. And we just talk.
  • Steve de los Guantes
    Porkchopgreasy12 maybe shouldn’t do reviews
Odenkirk and Cross episode This is a delicious medley of simulated conversation bathed in improvisational talking and they seem to be going on tangents and seeing if they can derail each other. All other podcasts should be ashamed of themselves for trying so hard to have “meaningful discussions” and being “thoughtful interlocutors” as if anyone even knows what any of those words mean anymore anyway anyhow. If Fun listening is the kind of thing you’re into that sort of thing you want it all the way through then I would recommend it. Know You Are Loved. You will find a way to love this if you’re not a person who is bad at enjoying stuff.
  • tridongo
    Very Entertaining
I love how this pod seems like a casual conversation between two old friends, who happen to have a lot of great stories. The one with Marc Maron in particular is outstanding.
  • Gooprzgoop
    Yup
I’ve gotten a lot of chaos escapism from your material over the years, I am thoroughly enjoying these conversations as well. Thank you.
  • Sabacc72
Um, improv isn’t for everyone. Uh…
Some of the stories are great but Cross loves to mix in random bits of improv that he encourages his guests to join. It works to some extent but they always go too long and sounds like a rehearsal, a first draft that’s not ready for an audience. He’s clearly having fun so the devoted David Cross fan might love it but I’ll tune in when there’s a particular guest I’m interested in. At this early stage it also could use some editing because there’s a good five to ten minutes of “uh” and “um” coming from the host more than once in most sentences.
  • porkchopgreasy12
    nope
i mean, not everybody should be doing a podcast
  • Bambootim
    Very nice
This show stays on my list. David, you are very relaxed and allow the show to breathe.

    Easy Listen 🙌🏼
It’s everything you would want to hear and expect from David’s podcast. Enjoyed all the episodes so far, and look forward to many more!
  • Grendel’s Den
    Perfect podcast host
David listens to his guests and doesn’t talk over them. That makes a huge difference for listeners (at least, this listener). He’s so funny and irreverent, with great stories, but he’s also gentle. A good person. One of my new favorite podcasts.

Can’t wait for David Cross AI!
Mountains of David content all in one place makes for easy model generation. Just listened to the Jason Bateman episode (sorry bob) and loved it! 100% Adding this to my weekly listenings to include one more celebrity that I can steal jokes and personality from.
