Cover Up: Body Brokers

For eight years, Megan Hess ran Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in the small town of Montrose, Colorado. She promised clients discounts on normally expensive cremations, a seeming kindness in a town where many are poor. But in the back of the funeral home, Megan’s elderly mother Shirley was actually dismembering the dead. And then Megan was selling the body parts – heads, torsos, legs – to companies that claim to do medical research. The families who trusted Megan –- they had no idea what she was really up to. When they came to pick up the ashes of their loved ones, they instead received a mixture of ashes of various people. They had no idea of their betrayal until some received a strange phonecall from the FBI.Megan and Shirley were body brokers, trading on a dark network where people buy and sell bodies. What exactly were the two women after? Who was really buying those stolen bodies, and why?Body Brokers is part of The Binge - subscribe to listen to all episodes, all at once, ad-free right now. Subscription-ed to death
If this is the format of podcasts going forward…that is, sucking you in with an interesting first episode and then requiring a subscription to hear the rest, I won’t be listening to podcasts anymore. Enough is enough with the greedy subscription models with everything we do. Such a turn off.

    Had no clue!
I’m a local to this area and had no clue any of this happened- holy smokes! Like others have mentioned, the mispronunciation on Montrose is grating. But overall really appreciate the way this was reported. All the interviews were interesting. Story is fully insane. Gotta love mountain life!

    Great Listen! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow! This is one of the most incredible podcasts that I’ve listened too so far. Every single episode had me listening carefully. Great work to everyone on the team!

    Click bait
What a shame. Trick someone into listening to your podcast. Peak their interest the slam the door shut until they pay up. That stinks

    Fascinating
Industry needs regulation. Very fair reporting. Want more info on the topic.

    Old Montrose Resident
I use to live in Montrose for 3 years & this story is WILD! Yes it’s a small town, yes everyone is nice to you, yes it’s a small community, & I loved it for the time I was there. As I thought more & more about staying there forever I couldn’t, something just always seemed off.

    It’s NOT Mont Rose!!
Every time she said Mont Rose it drove me nuts! Why mispronounce the name if the town? 8 episodes of mispronunciation!

    Montrose not Mont Rose
Great podcast but I am also a native Coloradoan and after all the interviews she still mispronounced the name of the town.

    Montrose not Mont Rose
Great series, as a Coloradan though the hosts pronunciation of the town of Montrose drives me insane

    Unbelievable
This one had me say…NO WAY. It was the most enthralling pod cast I have listened to, even though it was morbid.

    Who Knows if it’s good?!
Would have liked to have listened but after the first episode, it’s subscription only. Disappointed that this is the business model of all new podcasts. Don’t bother unless you want to pay up! Sounds like it would have been good though.

    Guess the ending!
Where is the rest of ur story? Do people HAVE to be forced into a subscription to find out what- when- where- how does it end? Is this any way to treat people who have an interest in this subject? I have tried time and again to get to the part of discovering what is going on, but all I can get is the same part of ur story over and over( for months) and never get the ending to ur story. Why not be up front and say, “Read this happening, get interested in the people, and subscribe to find out the middle and ending of our story.” Am I doing something wrong? Confused in Cincinnati.

    Wasted my time
So I listened to the first episode after hearing an ad for the show. The first episode was a little rough but a lot of time the first episodes can be. Just went to click on the second episode and they want a subscription.
