Robot Unicorn

Join me, Jess VanderWier, a registered psychotherapist, mom of three, and founder of Nurtured First, along with my husband Scott, as we dive deep into the stories of our friends, favourite celebrities, and influential figures. In each episode, we skip the small talk and dive into vulnerable and honest conversations about topics like cycle breaking, trauma, race, mental health, parenting, sex, religion, postpartum, healing, and loss.We are glad you are here.PS: The name Robot Unicorn comes from our daughter. When we asked her what we should name the podcast, she confidently came up with this name because she loves robots, and she loves unicorns, so why not? There was something about the playfulness of the name, the confidence in her voice, and the fact that it represents that you can love two things at once that just felt right.

    Love this podcast
Robot unicorn has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts. I really resonate with Jess’s parenting advice and general approach and I love to hear both Scott and Jess’s perspectives as they discuss parenting topics. Highly recommend!

    Life changing
I absolutely love listening to Robot Unicorn!!!! Jess and Scott are easy to listen to and the information they have to share has been life changing for my toddler and I. Thank you both for being so helpful in navigating all the ups and downs of raising my first child.

Such a good podcast makes me a more connected parent!
I LOVE this podcast. I didn’t realize that Nururted First had a podcast, OMG! Lots of interesting topics and I love that it’s all about seeing your child on a deeper level. I started implemented a curiosity with my children (2 boys, 3 yo and 4 yo) and found so much connection with them. I am also getting my 4 yo to open up to me more and see him for who he is, and the frustration that sometimes occurs are less and less in our home. I love the episode also seeing you partner on a deeper level and trying to find things that meet their needs (Love language podcast), I am finding things that I love in my husband in deeper ways and feel much more connected. Thank you, think this podcast really hit home for me and glad I am apart of this community.

    💕💕💕
More than once I have had to pause the podcast, cry, and come back to finish listening. I’m pretty confident I was a highly sensitive child, and now my daughter is. I’m learning so much! I understand and am able to put works to childhood experiences and how to be a better parent now. please keep them coming!!

    Interesting but lacks depth
The discussion topics are interesting and I like how they provide ample real examples. However for a 1 hour episode I find it lacks depth. For example in the beyond food episode in the course of an hour the take away was eat together because food is a social habit and don’t involve coercion. For someone dealing with the issue this point is something you learn from a quick google. I am disappointed that I didn’t learn anything new and come away with something to apply to my parenting after that episode.

    Top parenting podcast
I’ve followed Jess for years on Instagram and started listening to her podcast when it first came out. It allows me to talk to my husband about topics that could potentially cause some conflict. My husband thinks a lot like Scott (engineer as well) and I love being able to send podcast episodes to my husband. He’s able to relate to Scott’s thoughts/questions, which makes it more relatable for him.

Just what I was looking for!
I just found your podcast a few weeks ago and I love it! I’ve already shared it with 5 other moms. I haven’t gone through the old episodes but I will soon.

    Insightful
I really like this podcast because it apples to different age groups and is very applicable to everyday.

    thank you.
I just listened to your episode on sleep/sleep training (after a follower suggested I hit play), and thank you! I’m a first time momma (at 38 so I crave sleep more) to a 15 month old and sleep has been my biggest stressor. I refused to sleep train and have struggled with the messages suggesting I do. Maybe it’s the therapist in me. It just didn’t feel right. The problem is my little is not a great sleeper and it’s really hard at nights. Your episode really helped me be more aware of the mindset shifts I need to make and you also helped validate the rage that can often come up internally (Like, “Bro, go to bed!”) for me. I also loved the tip of not trying to change things at 2am, which I did last night and it was an epic fail. I’d LOVE to hear an episode on what did work to help your littles sleep better. Appreciate you!!

Fantastic Source for both Parents and Kids
I listened to this podcast for advice for my young kids, but found meaning in my own, deep-rooted childhood trauma in parallel. Props to providing real information for those of us who want to break the cycle.

    informative and thought provoking
In each episode topics are discussed from a place of curiosity and awareness of the challenges facing parents. Very actionable tips too!

    My favorite parenting podcast
Robot Unicorn is hands down my favorite parenting podcast. I love the topics and the content. Jess and Scott deliver stories and advice in such a relatable, vulnerable, authentic way. They have deep conversations, sometimes different opinions, and it doesn’t feel scripted. I can’t wait to catch up on all the episodes and continue to learn and grow!

    My favorite parenting podcast
I LOVE robot unicorn! This is seriously my favorite parenting podcast out there. It feels the most relatable and easy to understand. I love how laid back it is. Please keep making podcasts!

Finished the backlog and can’t wait for more!
My daughter is 2 and we have another on the way, due in January. I’ve spent the last three years listening to parenting podcasts, reading books, sifting through research, and working through as much material as I can to be the parent I want to be for my kids. I work in animal welfare as a behavior professional using ABA in my daily work. This is the first and only podcast that feels wholly aligned with how I want to parent, addresses the biggest challenges I have faced including my own childhood trauma, partner communication, and utilizing my knowledge of behavior and learning theory in a way that feels “right”. Thank you for putting this information out into the world. It really feels as though it is helping to shape and guide our parenting journey.

    Ep: Strong willed kids !
the biggest thing i've learned from watching you on IG and now this episode is to GET CURIOUS! with our kids. it is so so important for so many reasons and I think your platform does a really great job highlighting this with practical and real scenarios. Keep up the great work, and thanks for all you do!

    Episode request
I love nurtured first and this podcast both! I follow you religiously and i am a better parent because of this channel. I did have an episode request. Please share on how can we get kids to open up more and share whats going on in their life(follow up on the friendship episode). I feel like when i try to get my toddler to share about her day it sounds more like im quizzing her and she closes up. Rather than ‘quizzing’ them about their day and struggles how can we make it more organic.

    Confidence in parenting
This is a wonderful parenting podcast that has changed some of my initial views on parenting styles and helped me to be more confident in my actions. I am a first time mom, and I want to foster a close relationship with my son. Parenting is hard and there’s no quick fix to any challenge you face. I love the honestly and the insights this podcast gives.

    Actually helpful
I’ve listened to a few podcasts and I’m always feeling so empowered and like I learned a lot! Scott and Jess give tangible tips on what to do. I always feel so seen and resonate with so much that they say. I appreciate their dynamic on the podcast and have sent a few to my husband to listen to. It helps having Scott’s perspective- for me and my husband both!

Thoughtful & Informed - New favorite parenting podcast!
Learning so much about how to tackle real life parenting struggles thanks to this podcast! I’m a first time mom of a 13 month old and I’m eager to set my daughter and my family up for a healthy future. I love that Jess’ insight includes research-backed tools and methods. It’s also straight to the point, yet lighthearted enough to enjoy as a daily listen during my walks or errands. Please keep up the great work! My only feedback/request is if you could provide more guidance for those of us in the very early years (infant/toddler) - it’s hard to know which strategies I can actually apply to the developmental stage of my one year old - providing more examples across all ages or specifying what age you’re intending an example for each time you discuss would be helpful! Thanks for sharing your experiences & expertise!

    Best Parenting Podcast
This podcast is so informative and gives great non judgmental advice for parents. Jess and Scott and are so insightful and have a great dynamic to listen to. This is a great podcast for any parent looking for advice or just information about these important topics!
  • #1 fan/girlfriend :)
    First podcast review ever
LISTEN. TO. THIS. PODCAST. I have never written a review for a Podcast but I felt called to for this. Jess and her husband Scott give wise guidance, no harsh judgments, and vulnerably share. Some parenting podcasts cause me anxiety and this one does the opposite. Jess is a trained therapist and Mom of 3 you know her discussions are based in evidence as well as experience. Plus hearing her husband's perspective is so valueable!! I have her Parenting Littles course which I will be diving into soon and need to get her Body Safety course. THANK YOU for this podcast and it all!!

    Love, Love
I don’t listen to podcasts, but when Jess from Nurtured first released this podcast with her husband I was so excited! I downloaded Apple Podcasts right then! They are such a relatable couple and I love that Jess is a registered therapist so I feel like I’m getting info that’s based in research. Could not recommend this podcast more!

    Thank you!!
Wow! Thank you! This is a very relatable podcast with great insight into an area that my husband and I both struggle with as parents that both have ADHD and are parenting a child with ADHD and anxiety as well as a child that is highly sensitive. Anger and annoyance has been such an easy reaction lately for us and this episode offers so many great suggestions on how to minimize those reactions and build our tolerance for handling the overwhelming situations that are bound to happen in life.

    So much to learn from!
I love listening to Jess and Scott talk to each other. I feel like I’m sitting in your living room having a conversation. Hearing a husband and wife talk to each other like they’re best friends is wonderful. That is my favorite part, on top of all of Jess’ clinical knowledge and all the inner work she and Scott have done. I can’t wait to hear how your wisdom deepens as your kids age.

    Real Life and Relatable
Love you showing up in your authentic self using real life scenarios that connect you with your audience. Parenting is not easy and no one wants to feel alone with their struggles. Thank you for providing content that is easy and enjoyable to listen to, as well as understand. It is helping to "normalize" the trying and difficult moments of parenthood through support, care and kindness.

Easy to Listen and Important to Hear!
I really love this podcast! It is such a helpful tool as a parent, partner and mental health practitioner. The insight and information is very digestible and easy to listen to. Their voices are very gentle and clear which is lovely. It isn’t loaded with background music or sound effects to overstimulate or surprise you. I have so many questions I look forward to listening for. Thank you for being such a great resource! I admire your work!

    Love Love Love!
As a long time follower of NurturedFirst, I am so so happy for this new show! I personally have zero positive role models in my life to look up to when it comes to parenting as a first time mama. My husband and I both come from broken families and carry a lot of past trauma that we’ve had to process and work through. We have learned SO MUCH about connected parenting and apply it and see results in our overall happiness and we fall asleep every night proud of ourselves that we are doing this hard work of breaking generational cycles and doing our very best for our sweet little girl. Having a show where I can come to every week, and know I’ll be able to apply atleast one tidbit of information to our journey as parents, helps me feel this is always a productive way to spend my time. Thank you for the life changing advice and sharing the knowledge of what is developmentally normal for our children to experience (tantrums, normalizing/accepting all feelings, etc). We are so grateful to have you in our parenting toolbox! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
  • JPowidel
    Thank you!
I feel hopeful for the first time in a while during my parenting journey. After listening to the highly sensitive parenting episode I feel like I have tools and things to try.. so thank you both!!!

I hate podcasts, but love Jess! And now I love this podcast😂
I hate podcasts. They are so boring to me. I’ve only listened to one other one (Serial) 😂 so I resisted listening to this podcast for months since I don’t typically enjoy the format, but I love Jess and follow her on Instagram. She urged highly sensitive parents to check out her latest episode and I’m so glad I took the plunge. I’ll be catching up on all other episodes now! And I’ve been wanting a parenting lesson that my husband and I can learn from together! Her husband Scott being on this podcast too is PERFECT! I know he will be relatable to my husband it will take our parenting to the next level. Thank you for your important work! Ps your bedtime course got my child to sleep in her own bed last night!💃🏽 It is GOLD!

    Real, relatable, and empowering
I appreciate this podcast so much. As parents of young children, my partner and I are often trying to figure out the best way to handle a situation but don’t always feel like we have the time to research how to approach it with the connection and clarity that we want to have. The dialogue, real examples, skepticism met with expertise, and compassionate tone of Jess and Scott’s conversations (and the very pertinent topics!) are so valuable - and the format allows me to digest the information in a way and at a time that works for me. I can’t wait for the episode on counterwill!

    Do we overcomplicate parenting?
This podcast is my FAVORITE podcast and is such a wealth of knowledge. I enjoy Jess & Scott’s relationship and relate to their individual pets and parenting styles. This episode was a GOLD NUGGET and I’m so grateful I cried. If I had the funds I’d truly purchase every course. Love Nurtured First also. THANK YOU!!! 💚🥲👏🏻

    Changed my life
This podcast (and Nurtured First, previously Our Mama Village) has changed my life (& my daughters’)! I have purchased multiple courses- Body Safety, Setting Boundaries, PLK, Bedtime Battles & I Love My Feelings! Now, I look forward to each podcast episode released on Mondays. I love that Jess and Scott are so relatable and also bring in guests! I have listened to every episode and I know that the information is planting seeds and changing generations to come! Cannot recommend enough!

Just binged all the episodes thus far! So grateful for the voice that Jess brings to this space and the awesome guests she has had on the show thus far. Also love the way each show begins and ends with Jess and her husband chatting about the episode. Keep em coming! 🥰

    Thank you!
I just finished the eating podcast and I can’t wait to listen to more. I loved hearing the difference between Scott and Jess’s relationship with food, and can identify with both of their experiences. I plan to incorporate the tips on discussing food with my own kids. And yes, please post your meal plan!

    Resilient Kids ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Amazing episode. I see so much of myself in Jess’ story, and this was very helpful to consider in my own heart as we build frustration tolerance in our three children.

    Perfect Podcast
I have never written a review but I felt compelled! Listen to Jess, her husband, and guests are just so real. I love that they own their struggles and are showing families that they can grow, change, and evolve while making mistakes. I already finished the first two and can’t wait for the next show. I don’t listen to many podcasts, but this one is different!

    Friends
I'm just a Jess listening to a Jess and feeling as connected as our names are alike. This content is gold because its quick, powerful, and raw- revealing tid bits of life as most know it to be but don't typically talk about. Parenting, eating, isolation.... and eagerly anticipating more and more. Jess and Scott, thank you for connecting in the podcast format where parents can listen while doing all the daily necessities! Instagram is nice/helpful but this is definitely a hefty bonus for your audience!
  • dmleg
    Real and honest
I don’t write reviews very often, but this first conversation was so real and honest… while also feeling like just a discussion between two good friends. It also had such good tidbits of information to take away. Really looking forward to future episodes… thank you! Love the deep convos ❤️

    Que the Tears
As a mama of 3 with a lot of baggage from my childhood, this podcast brought me to tears. The weight of looking like I have it all together as a parent is so heavy. So heavy. I am thankful to know I’m not the only one carrying that burden. May we all have the courage to give our kids Snickers for breakfast as we unpack our inner child and self! 🥹
  • Afzah88
    Very relatable and healing
I've been following Jess @nurturedfirst for a while.. have taken her courses and toolkits.. what I love the most about this podcast (just as much of her other resources) is how easily she connects with us. She brings the relatable ness through story telling which makes us feel less intimidating and validated. Can't wait to listen to other episodes...
  • Just a Funny Mom
    Parenting our younger selves
With only one episode so far, this podcast is changing the way people are parenting. This isn’t just a fluff or fad of ‘gentle parenting’. No, this is healing decades of trauma and triggers in order for growth to happen. It’s beautiful and deep and funny and a breath of fresh air. I can’t wait for more! Thank you for putting words to what so many of us couldn’t 🙌🏼🌟
  • The Trail
    From IG To Podcasts!
I have followed Jess for a few years now. As a nurse practitioner to little kids, I have a select few accounts I recommend to parents…Nurtured First for parenting/reparenting, Karrie Locher for all things mom life/pregnancy and postpartum and Milestones and Motherhood for development. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Nurtured first and have bought courses and workshops to help me become a more curious parent after growing up in a disciplinarian home with spanking/time outs. So so grateful to now have a podcast to listen to for more stories, advice and content.
  • Emi—-rob
Love this newest extension of Nurtured First
I love following along with Jess on instagram. I own most if not all of the courses and they are so very helpful. This is just another level and I love it.
