The Youth Development Center

New Hampshire has sent its most troubled kids to the same juvenile detention center for more than a century. It's a place that was supposed to nurture them, that instead hurt them – in some of the worst ways imaginable. It's now at the center of one of the biggest youth detention scandals in American history. How did this happen – and how did it finally come to light?

    I’m dubious
What are the standards of proof for convictions on the various allegations? This didn’t seem to be discussed. Could be several legit crimes with hundreds of simple me to allegations from folks who want to cash in.

    NHPR is fantastic
I have so much respect for NHPR. This story was told so incredibly well, despite being so devastating. I only wish there were more episodes because these survivors deserve as much recognition as possible.

    When are more episodes dropping!
Love the show, just confused as to why there’s only three episodes!

    Amazingly told story
NHPR does it again. This is an amazing story told with care and respect. Just another example of the need for comprehensive journalists on the ground to tell the hardest of stories.

    Fantastic but…
It abruptly ended. Reminiscent of Game of Thrones. I think digging deeper with a few more episodes would have made this story so much better.

    Thank you to the survivors
Thank you for sharing your stories. Thank you to the host and producers for making it accessible. My heart breaks for all those children, now adults.

Sadly amazing story from Jason Moon and NHPR as always
The stories are told with compassion for the survivors as I’ve come to expect from a Jason Moon & NHPR team podcast. These survivor stories from men are necessary to help the world understand that survivors come in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders.

    Good show
I’m glad this issue is getting so much coverage lately. This is worth a listen. Now, podcasters need to go beyond the trauma mining and move on to exposing the web of related companies who are still duping parents and abusing kids

    It's all true and worse
I am an HR Director for a designated NH Recovery Friendly Workplace. This is a NH program designed to encourage companies to provide second chances to people who have been sent to prison for crimes associated with substance abuse. I have sat face to face with a man who told me explicitly about his sexual abuse at YDC. I believe there are lawyers and settlements going on but it doesn't excuse the behavior of those men abusing those children. These kids, from poverty and poor parenting, landed in YDC for punishment that was both unfair and unjust because they were trying to survive. Please have Rebecca Levoie call me. Breathtakingly awful
These poor people. Storytelling is compassionate, well-researched, and clear, as I’ve come to expect from Jason Moon and the NHPR team.
