Drowning Creek

In the early morning hours of November 2, 2007, Justin Gaines walked out of a popular nightclub on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia and was never seen again. The investigation into Gaines' disappearance quickly went cold and remained so until 2015, when a man confessed to taking part in his murder. Though this detailed confession described what happened to Justin Gaines, who was involved, and where his body was placed, no arrest has ever been made. Host Sean Kipe digs into this story to find out what really happened to Justin Gaines and tries to make sense of the still ongoing investigation. But as Sean gets deeper, he finds himself in an underworld of drugs, money, and murder.‘Best 2024, Podcasts of the Year’ – Amazon Music Podcasts

    Hard to follow
Most of the interviews that were played were impossible to hear. The storyline isn’t linear and it’s hard to follow.

    Don’t waste your time
The early episodes are engaging as they track the initial disappearance of Justin, then everything slowly but surely spins off track into hypothetical discussions on what COULD have happened. Serial killer! Biker gangs! Mexican cartel! UFOs! When the dive team arrived to follow some clearly dead-end lead, I realized there would be no conclusion and they were just filling time for ad money. The host becomes more dramatic when he needs to sell increasingly silly theories. As always, I feel awful for the family, but don’t waste your time and support this trash.

    Excellent
As a resident in of Walton County, GA (Loganville) all I can say is WOW! Who knew... This story has so many layers but the ending and the information that was discovered after all these years is shocking. However, if you have any experience with Walton County’s injustice system is not shocking at all. Not many want to do their jobs and when you do it for them they don’t listen. Great job diving into this case and bringing so much informative information out. Prayers for this family!

    Not as good as Up&Vanished!
While I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into a podcast like this, the storytelling wasn’t great. Going through a real life case like this can get confusing and I felt at times that the writing/way it was presented wasn’t the best. I think the gold standard for something like this is “Up and Vanished” - unfortunately, Drowning Creek is nowhere near that level of entertainment. Segway’s into different characters/leads were all over the place. They need to do a lot of work on presenting a case, especially if it’s not and you’re going to leave the audience with really no more info than they started with other than a longer list of suspects.

    Great Long Form True Crime

What a true from podcast is SUPPOSED to be!
This one is amazing. Mr. Kipe and his team have done an outstanding job. Production is A1, and he takes great pains to paint Justin G. As a real human being with a family that loved him. Job well done

The case is still open.. Wasted my time
There's no ending. Feel like I wasted so many hours for nothing.

    Drowning Creek
I find it interesting how many people gave this podcast negative reviews simply because it didn’t provide answers or because each theory led to numerous dead ends. To me, that’s exactly the point of the podcast. Imagine how the investigators and Justin’s family must have felt when every lead turned up empty and every potential location for Justin’s body led nowhere. If listeners are experiencing that same sense of frustration, I think Sean did an excellent job of telling the story. He brought attention to a case that had been largely overlooked and did so with immense respect for Justin’s family. I found the podcast deeply compelling and can’t stop thinking about Justin’s family, who may never find the answers they so desperately need. Well done, Sean.

    No thanks
Every season is like Geraldo and Al Capone vault. Don’t waste your time.

Wow what a waste of time
If you like, listening to a story about a bunch of losers, who are also a bunch of liars and you don’t know what’s real and what isn’t this is the podcast for you?

    Such a Rabbit Hole
I have definitely enjoyed listening to this podcast and have completed it within a day. It was like I went down a rabbit hole and can’t get out. I have so many questions!

    So wordy
I have to say, the narrator drives me crazy. Too wordy, too much flowery language. So irritating, I couldn’t keep listening. Not for me
  • ….🏄🏻
    Good work Sean.
    I thoroughly enjoy your podcast.

    Another great series!
From “In The Red Clay” to “Drowning Creek”, Sean Kipe and his crew has developed another true crime series that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

    Host needs to do better
Case is interesting, glad it’s getting attention for the families sake but… it’s pretty upsetting and overall just irresponsible of an “investigative journalist” to not be more conscientious of his own limited beliefs and education as it relates to intersectionality… Why would Dylan Glass lie and implicate himself and others in a murder if it wasn’t true? Are you seriously asking that? Why would a Black man who has repeatedly told law enforcement he didn’t have anything to do with a crime, the murder of a missing young white man, eventually get fed up from not being believed and just tell police what they want to hear? When he’s already facing serious time? And take down others he’s perceived as having wronged him in the process? You really can’t wrap your mind around all the reasons he may have done that? You haven’t ever seen or heard of false confessions from individuals with varying levels of privilege and power, or rather, the serious lack thereof. To ignore all the systems in place that would have easily led Dylan Glass to falsely confess and to say that “makes no sense” is wildly frustrating. Do better, Sean Kips.

    Be grateful in all things
Grateful for the host getting the word out for Justin’s family. Grateful for the time the host took to share the details that maybe someone listening can further assist on. Grateful to all the people that helped the host as much as they felt they could. I pray to God all these cold cases find justice and for the families to stay strong and keep faith.

    Compelling and intriguing!
This podcast was so well presented and woven together! I couldn’t stop listening. It was so compelling and intriguing. Thank you for getting the word out about Justin and for trying to help his family and thank you to all the others who are trying to help, as well.

    Soap Opera
The way the host makes the most obvious statements yet acts as if they are profound while the dramatic music plays was just way too soap opera-y to me. This case could’ve been cut in half if all the meaningless filler was removed.
  • angel.edge95
    Frustrating but good
To me, the killers are obvious and that’s so frustrating. The podcast is extremely well done and well researched and I highly recommend it!

Is no one going to talk about this?
Overall, the storytelling is decent, but the opinions of the host are…interesting. I understand questioning when a suspect takes back their confession, but this was a little much. Do I think Dylan Glass is a liar? Kinda. But I’ve heard enough TC stories about false confessions, especially involving a Black “suspect,” that I am doubting the investigators/cops etc more than I doubt Dylan’s story to Kipe. If it helps where my perspective is coming from, think Serial. The stories about who is telling the truth or not—if it’s the cops or the suspect(s)—and the false confessions are very parallel with this case. A Black man is coerced into making a false confession and years later takes it back saying he lied to get the cops to stop interrogating and torturing him. And people severely doubt it was false “because he confessed!” The best investigative journalists question everything and everyone, even their own opinions or biases. This did not seem to happen in this pod. Everything else seemed fine I guess, but this didn’t scream genuine journalism to me.

Sent here from crime junkies. I loved this podcast!

    No Answers and Drawn Out
This is 9 episodes that could have been one. All the pointless rabbit holes every time some half-thought idea is mentioned. If the folks mentioned in it weren’t all so poor, they’d be suing for libel. At the base is an interesting story, but the self righteous behavior of the host as if he’s going to solve it was unnecessary, and almost embarrassing.

    Sooo good!!
Soooo good!! I listen to a lot of podcasts and this was right up there with some of my favorites.
  • Raspberry_delight
    Fantastic
I thought this series to be filled with twists and turns. I don’t want to give anything away but I was convinced of one idea at the beginning and by the last episode I wasn’t so sure of anything anymore. Truly, masterful investigation work here with a lot to be considered before throwing in one’s own opinion!

    So very good
If the podcast is done by Sean Kipe, listen to it. This is another fabulous collection by Mr. Kipe that takes you to place & people you’d never meet. I pray for the family to receive justice & hope the people involved will want to unload the burden of this senseless crime.

    Meaning of title
Sean is of the highest class of investigative journalists, bravo on this podcast. But I never figured out why it’s called “Drowning Creek”?Usually during a podcast, they drop the name of it somewhere in the story & you understand the meaning of the title. “Like in Status: Untraced,” he eventually says that that is what it says next to Justin Alexander’s name on the list of missing people in that Parvati Valley. But I never heard Sean or anyone else say “Drowning Creek.” Or maybe I missed it?

    Looking forward to updates
I have never felt more compelled to research a case or be subscribed to updates to follow a case like I have this one. This case NEEDS to be solved. I want to drop everything in my life and start searching for all the answers. I really hope the FBI does what state and local government could not/ would not do. Bring that boy home to his mom! I beg and plead that Wavland updates this podcast as frequently as possible.

    Good storytelling
Liked how it was written and storyboarded. Didn’t overuse interview audio unless it made sense. To an extent at least, I agree with the self congratulatory tone. That was my only negative takeaway here. And I will also say, this is a true story. You can’t predict how it will end when you are producing a podcast like this. Sometimes it will be repetitive and lose steam. That’s reporting. That’s storytelling.

    Rumors and confusion
Gave up after episode 4. Confusing and unorganized with rumors and it feels like it’s going in circles. Read a few other reviews and basically confirmed that I should not waste my time finishing this one.

Another Quality Investigation from Sean Kipe
Excellent storytelling, and integrity of the investigation is the most important thing to his process. Looking forward to his next one.

    Nothing Burger
Finished and I feel like I know less than I did after the first episode. Every episode ends in a cliffhanger with no payoff, and now the season just did the same thing. Don’t waste your time.
  • BamSam234
    Overly dramatic, messy storytelling
I had to stop this one several times because my eyes got tired from rolling. The host uses overly dramatic music and is just not a talented investigative reporter or storyteller. It just comes across as juvenile and self-promoting. The story is repetitive and strung together so haphazardly that I honestly just stopped caring.
  • Blueswsky
    Excellent and Important!
Great investigative work and podcasting. Hoping for more developments and future updates!
  • StorytellerGal
Started strong but could’ve used some trimming.
It was interesting at the start, but as the series go on, there is more and more “he said she said” that just bogged the whole story down. Ultimately, I stopped caring. Plus, the podcast are spends way too much time congratulating himself.
  • CJ San Mardo
Repetitive and simply built on "feelings" and hunches
I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts. Totally agree with other listeners who call this one repetitive. Constantly presenting rumors, detective's "feelings" on body language, and repeating the same "facts" over and over again got old so quickly. Not sure how there are so many good ratings. Boot lickers who see the justice system as an episode of Law and Order might like this one. Once you see the lack of depth though, it's hard to finish this one.
  • Fhjkcvnfck
    This series is a winner!
Sean gives the best delivery of the information out of any of the true crime podcasts I listen to! He really knows how to keep you interested and you will hate having to wait for the next episode to drop!

    Why was this made?
I’m so sick of podcasts being made that don’t have a resolution…and I’m very confused why this one has such high ratings because it wasn’t very interesting and it was repetitive. Feeling like I’ve wasted a lot of time listening tbh. 🫢
  • TrudyTedeschi
    Rumors
This podcast is just repeating a bunch of rumors. I keep zoning out because I don’t believe anything anyone is saying. I feel sorry for Mom and the family but this is just not a compelling podcast and it’s not going to end with anything new.
  • KennyMagoo
    Ugh
In a world where missing persons cases tend to be filled with twists, turns, and wild unknowns, this is one where all roads lead back to the same names, same places, and same story. It’s a devastating situation for the victim’s family and I hope this podcast leads to definitive answers, justice, and maybe some kind of peace for them, while worrying the host’s attempt to spin suspense and tug heartstrings just makes a mockery of their pain.
  • );9/198;$/!-@.8
    Lots of conjecture
There is so much conjecture and distracting nonsense it oftentimes feels irresponsible. While this podcast is painted as a benevolent undertaking, it is really just a profit grab. Despite (or because of?) all the drama and endless rabbit holes, the podcast is largely boring after the first couple of episodes.
  • Nuggets mom24/7
    Interesting enough
Interesting enough for me to listen to all the episodes but lots of unnecessary repetition. Hearing the actual police interviews kept me coming back. End is - meh.
  • Ratman Michigan
Spoiler alert - still no clue who did it
10 episodes that could have been 5 and it wanders all over front to back.
