The Jack Benny Show

118

The Jack Benny Program, starring Jack Benny, was a radio-TV comedy series which ran for more than three decades and is generally regarded as a high-water mark in 20th-century comedy. Jack Benny (February 14, 1894 in Chicago, Illinois â December 26, 1974 in Beverly Hills, California), born Benjamin Kubelsky, was an American comedian, vaudeville performer, and radio, television, and film actor. He was one of the biggest stars in classic American radio and was also a major television personality. Benny was renowned for his flawless comic timing and (especially) his ability to get laughs with either a pregnant pause or a single expression, such as his signature exasperated "Well!". In hand with his dear friend and great "rival" Fred Allen â their long-running "feud" was a famous running gag. Now join us as we return to The Jack Benny Program filled with laughter and great gags that will keep you coming back for more.

    Alright Okay!
I’m really glad these classic episodes are available for people to enjoy for free. The audio is mostly listenable although the volume is occasionally all over the place from one episode to the next. I just wish the feed was in order or at least organized in some way. It skips all over the history of the show and some episodes are not dated, some are repeats originally posted not long before. It’s kind of a mess.

    Quality
It’s great that this is on here, but the audio quality is terrible. You can barely hear them.

    Timeless comedy
Let me start off by saying I'm 24 years old. I first heard old time radio shows when I was 9. I was looking through my grandfathers things and found some cassettes of baby snooks, Amos and Andy, abot and Costello, and so on and so on. I would instead of playing video game would sit in my room and listen to the radio and close my eyes and play out what I would hear. It wasn't till later in life that I found out that it was them standing and reading from a script. Non the less I still love the shows and listen to them while on my last deployment. Keep the pod cast alive cause there is a 9 year old boy who still loves to close his eyes and listen and let his imagination run wild.

Very good! Ok yes-the recordings aren't that great quality- but come on, they were recorded in the 1930's! What else do you expect. Heartfelt thanks h. c. for these time honored radio classics!!

    Still as funny as ever!
I grew up watching a lot of the old radio stars on the TV in the 60's. It's truly a delight to hear what I missed being too young to remember the golden days of radio. As one poster said, some of these shows are not the best of quality, but really...that is to be expected taking into consideration the equipment of the radio age and the fact that these are very old recordings. We should be thankful that these shows exist today at all. Benny was not a spectacular talent...but he was a natural talent which is often better than those who come and go like a burning match, hot one day and cold the next. Benny's longivity speaks for itself. He was just one of those guys that had the knack for making you laugh, and making you feel right at home as well. Talent like that is rare today. Great Podcast!

    Jack Benny!
I'm a big Jack Benny fan, but i agree, the sound quality is very poor. Some episodes skip. It's very difficult to listen to. Also, most of the episodes take up an enormous amount of space, which is not very good for those of us that still have one of the original iPod nanos (mine's only 2G).

    Awesome!!!
This is great!!! I agree the shows in the 40's were the best but interesting to see how it evolved, with just Benny and Mary so far. I miss Rochester, Phil Harris, Don Wilson and Dennis Day. I hope we get to those.

    Good comedy, bad static
I would have given five stars for Jack Benny's genius comedy, but the poor quality of the recordings makes them less enjoyable to listen to.

    A Genius
Benny had a nearly flawless comedic instinct. It is amazing how well the material holds up even today. I agree that Benny (along with a talented supporting cast) truly hit his stride in the 40's, during the "Jello" years.

Early Jack and the gang is good, but the 40's Benny is best
I hope that this show gets to reach into the mid 40's run. The cast and writers crafted legendary segments, skits, one liners, and shows that are still being used as source material today. It was truly the best of the best.
