LodiarmyUnfortunateI used to love this show. I came here for the history. Enjoyed the host as well. Unfortunately, you are seemingly injecting more and more politics into this which I am not enjoying. I came first the history and find myself leaving because of politics.
-
Rich HoustonGreat podcastThanks for all the interesting history
-
Victorian2015Not a real history podcast.I give it 2 stars because the older shows are far more balanced as were the guests but as the shows go on the host becomes more radicalized and the guest more one sided to where now it’s just merely activist history. This culminated when he had Ty Seidule on and pretended like that dribble was history. The truly sad part is that the host doesn’t even know how laughable the show has become.

arlo blowzMcKenzie is weird lolOverall great show. The McKenzie dude’s argument comes across super Lost Causey though….. Shouldn’t feed into it. Onto the next.

Bandits19Too many adsAds completely ruin the flow of the conversations

unvoyageurGreat, but stay focusedThis is a great podcast for anyone interested in the Civil War. Lots of great guests, and lots of in-depth discussions. Only minor complaint is that about 20% of every one-hour episode is wasted on ads and host announcements. Would prefer that the max time possible is focused on the topic at hand.

Nickname12353Great program!I really enjoy this program. The information and authors that come on the show, the interaction with the host is great. I would really like to hear a bit more about the southern generals. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is the nasal breathing and mouse clicking noise coming from the host. I highly recommend doing something so those noises are minimize.

5 Travel Weary CowboysGood Civil War podcastLove learning about various new Civil War books. I wish you’d edit out the ads from the podcast.
-
Murphy TimGreat showI’ve been listening for years and years. I will continue to do so . Gerry is excellent
-
ChetPilsnerToo much political/extremist PropagandaExtreme left wing Propaganda masquerading as a history podcast. He injects his politics in everything and claims he isn’t political. Look at the fec.gov website and his name and see where he donates, it speaks for itself. I think this show stinks in my opinion.
-
Sgdhff Dr hdgrhIt is. Annoying. It is lame I don’t know how anyone enjoys it. It’s so stupid and it’s so slow. I don’t know how you speak so slow roast.
-
vaitnfuehWorth the TimeAlways interesting, including the personal commentary at the beginning and always balanced (in other words, it will, in turn, offend partisans on both sides) so if you are looking for defense of your cherished views, move on. The guests are generally well chosen and the host does a good job of getting to the essence of the guest’s work. The topics are broad in variety and range from common topics such as Gettysburg to more focused such as the life of soldiers, civilians and other points of interest during the rebellion period.
-
paulmarconeGreat for any Civil War enthusiastIntelligent and insightful talk show on the American Civil War. Great guests and always informative. A must listen for any Civil War student and/or enthusiast.

nmifdxnhddbWould recommendplease see subject line!

Thor ThoresonSelf-righteousLike many modern historians, much of what is discussed leaves out important historical context. In its place, the host invokes trendy left wing talking points and comes across as self-righteous in hindsight. It may help him fit in at university where there is no diversity of viewpoint, but it is not good history.

JamrogstMy Favorite PodcastIt’s a great podcast filled with tons of interesting information. I look forward to every new episode.

Sam.TuckerDon’t listen to the hatersGerry, I love the opening monologue! It’s one of my favorite parts of the show. In fact, the other week I saw ECU beat UH in basketball and immediately thought of this show. I enjoyed listening to you talk about the footnotes vs the endnotes because I guess I’m a boring college kid who finds the intricacies of historical writing fascinating. Don’t change. You’re doing awesome work and I couldn’t have any nicer things to say!
-
CSAnglicanFocus on the subject at handCompletely agree with “Spencer shooter”. By the end of the first segment on Jefferson Davis’ treason trial ( or the lack thereof) we had learned only the book’s title, author’s name and that the book had footnotes rather than endnotes. The show then ended with several regrets about running short of time and things left not discussed. Discussions are usually interesting when they do occur.
-
Spencer ShooterSpencer shooterGreat podcast The book authors are very informative and interesting. Gerry seems to not be able to separate contemporary politics from his podcast even with a tongue and cheek apology once in awhile. The first segment is information not relevant to anything related to the book being discussed and I suggest either making the podcast 45 minutes or using the time to cover the interesting review the author is giving in his or her book. It seems like time runs out many times where relevant information still is needed on the review and I feel like the first segment can be used better.
-
jfc kikiRadio America ads HorribleGreat podcast, very informative. I enjoy his opening monologues. The title music mix is distracting. But the underwriting Voice America channel has the worst, and I mean absolute garbage, their ads. Ugh.
-
ChrisbmanAlways interestingI agree that I usually fast forward the first 10-15 minutes to get to the good stuff. Insightful interviews have helped me with my Civil War research project immensely. I’ve contacted a few of the guests & they’ve been extremely helpful, as well. I love that I can usually listen with kids in the room, too. One of my favorite podcasts.
-
AvidpodlistenerGood pod but please get on with itI know you read these Gerry. Please, please stop the monologue at the beginning. Otherwise, I enjoy it.
-
KYoldtimerFavorite Civil War podcastExcellent guests and thoughtful questions.
-
Chris_JohnsonGreat shows, great interviews.Really learn a lot about topics I may have passed on previously. Contrary to some I also enjoy the hosts opening remarks which vary from sports to school happenings and everywhere in between. Thank you Gerry for years of great shows.
-
Clevefan55Gerry has a ax to grind...If your'e not a NeoUnionist, then theres no discussion or"proper perspective" point of view in his narrow guidelines of Civil War history. I enjoyed the author who heaven forbid was critical of Sherman and stated along the lines that he wasn't a good military general. I knew that would rub Prokopowicz the wrong way. He didn't really reply but later on other episode made one of his snarky better than thou put downs which was obviously directed at guest who made a put down of beloved union war hero. Calling him( not by name) amateur historian, very weak after the fact he was on his podcast. Last thing, really liked Gary Gallagher and was surprised and sure Gerry was shocked. lol When Gary stated not all those Confederate soldier monuments were put up because of Jim Crow white supremacy and they were simply put up for memory honor southern soldier. Surprised because Gallagher normally rides hard on the one cause "slavery" and dismantling Confederate heritage and lost cause themes.

Revans50Can't Get Enough ACWIf you can't read, watch or hear enough about the Civil War, then this podcast will help. Well done interviews with authors, historians, etc. Just skip past the beginning part where the host talks about...well, nothing really.
-
Bc272BestI have been listening for 10 years and this is consistently the best Civil War podcast ive encountered. Excellent guests and meaningful interviews.
-
AmityVilleNYRambles a bitSpends the first 15 minutes rambling about his own interests. Sometimes goes on a tangent away from the book. Gerry is a little pretentious at times. So you went to Hahvahd! Now he is claiming a book that lists temperatures from the 1860’s gives solid proof of global warming and a sick child should make us question religion. Won’t be wasting any more time with this clown. Gary Gallagher on one week and still he won’t stop talking about himself!

ECWho?Pick it up around minute 10Omgosh. The incessant droning on at the beginning about ECU sports or weather and who his alma mater (not ECU) beat in baseball is painful. Skip it and get to the guests which he occasionally lets talk. That’s the interesting part. He rebuts by saying ‘get your own podcast’. No but I have found several better ones where the host is gracious and let’s the subject talk for 10 minutes at a time without some banal academic banter that’s only purpose is to remind us that the host considers himself ‘academia’. A shame, his knowledge is vast but the way he presents it is self absorbed.
-
Rutherford1880Good interviews but skip the introductory remarksGerald Propkopowicz attracts interesting authors and scholars to his podcast. He has good interviewing skills and the substantive portion of the podcast is often interesting. The introductory remarks that often incorporate events at ECU, his personal reflections and that tend to ramble are uninteresting at best. Addressing this criticism in a recent podcast, Gerald Propkopowicz responded with the following unfortunate remark, “Get your own podcast.” I’ll continue to listen to the interviews but have learned to speed through the introductory remarks.

Launching PadGreat Civil War TalkThis is a wonderful podcast. Gerry has superior knowledge and great conversational style with his guests. Anyone interested in American History in general or the Civil War specifically will enjoy this podcast.

Palmetto PJFound a Road Companion!I have a daily hour plus drive to and from a South Carolina university where I am a communication professor. As a longtime Civil War buff, I have recently found an excellent and interesting passenger. Gerry is an excellent host and good listener to his guests. His pre-interview talks are often amusing and I appreciate his brand of humor and his life in academia comments and sarcasm at times. Keep the show going Dr. P.! Today I listened to Five Forks battle author. I visited that battlefield in May as part of a Lee's Retreat excursion from Petersburg to Appomattox. My only unanswered question from this interview was whether or not Lee sacked Pickett after his Five Forks debacle. Have heard and read different things about Lee and Pickett after that battle.

OddmonsterWhen a host can't get past himselfIt's hard to listen to these episodes when the first full 11 minutes of an episode is the host complaining about tenure options at his University, punctuated by ads for the show. Minute 12, we embark on the guest and lo and behold the host cannot stop making things about him. Ugh.
-
PSC1990One of my favorite podcasts, period.I have enjoyed listening to this podcast for years and it continues getting better and better. Every episode begins with the musings of the great host, Professor Gerry P and ends with interesting guests, most of whom are civil war scholars. It's somewhat difficult to describe the appeal of this podcast but I certainly love it.
-
Hoosier ListenerPretty Good PodcastThe skip ahead button on your podcast player was installed with this podcast in mind. The first several minutes most often consist of that unique combination of condescension and self important prattle that often characterizes those involved in higher education. But once we begin to explore the subject matter the podcast improves greatly. The guests seem well versed in the subject and offer interesting information. Listen with a discerning ear.
-
HungryjoeyGood, but could be greatThe host is knowledgeable and has wonderful guests and topics. The problem? He spends the first 10 minutes of every podcast talking about sports and local topics for his university that are only interesting to those associated with his school. Cut that out and it is 5 stars.
-
RandokeGreat seriesIf you're a civil war fan you're missing out. Thought provoking civil discussion. Don't let the talk radio wording scare you. It's not AM talk radio. Interview format with authors and other CW experts.
-
R@darBetter than mostAs with all podcasts that involve guests you sometimes get real clunkers and there have been a few but I enjoy the podcast. It isn,t just a rehash of battles or the politics of the era.
-
USAFCCFWonderful PodcastI’m glad I found this podcast, it is well done and interesting. I have a lot of catching up and listen daily at work
-
GarySeven2CWTRI have been listening to Civil War Talk Radio from near the beginning. It has been a wonderful free course in Civil War history taught by contemporary historians and authors. Dr Prokopowicz the host, is knowledgable on all subjects but an especially valuable resource with topics covering the western theater and Abraham Lincoln. Download a episode and give it a listen.
-
ChrisinfpGreat stuffIf you have a real interest in the Civil War, this is for you. However, if you believe slavery wasn't all that bad or that the war had little to do with slavery then you should probably skip it.
-
MnbookmanLoved It Until The Host Supported Gun ControlThis is a podcast with a LOT of content. Unfortunately, the host is a historical revisionist. Even with that, it would be a great podcast if the host would limit discussion of politics to the Civil War - he has enough guests and covers enough content to cover his factual sins. In his Gettysburg episode, he starts out by calling for gun control. Contemptible Yanqui pig Dog!
-
Bryan CeeMust listen for every CW buffI'm a regular amateur student of the Civil War and love this show. The topics are always interesting. Gerry is an academic and the discussion topics support that but are also accessible for anyone with above average knowledge of the period. My only complaint is that he's a UofM alum. And also episodes 402-412 don't work correctly.
-
Boston ExpatVery Good PodcastI enjoy the podcast very much and have for several years. Yes, Prof P opens with off topic monologues regarding his soccer interests, the life and times of academia and other topics however the podcasts are informative. Usually the guest is an author and they discuss one of the guest's books. I enjoy this because it gives me a chance to hear about a book and decide whether I want to read it or not. The interview is much longer than what can fit on a dust jacket or a summary. I do find the trials and tribulations of academia and writing to be interesting. Gerry doesn't get into details but it is an interesting peak into an industry and culture that I would otherwise have little opportunity to learn about. It should be noted, that Gerry is a Lincoln scholar so he brings a wealth of knowledge on Lincoln to the discussions as well.

Steve-O1979Best Civil War Podcast, period. It can be a little slow at times, but that's more about the format, than Gerry. Gerry is a great host, who brings in great guests. Defintely a show for those who want todelve deeper into the subject than mainstream understanding. You'll find the only detractors are those who forward the rather transperant argument that he is "biased towards the Union cause". Which, honestly, outs that individual as someone who is perfectly fine with whitewashed history. Real history pulls no punches, and if it paints the Confederate cause (as well as it's most ardent defenders), in a less than flattering light, I'm sorry but it simply and plainly can't be helped if one is determined to develop a full grasp on the subject. Gerry, it would seem, is a real historian, who isn't interested in forwarding half-truths and myths. I was born and raised in the deep south with my share of Confederate ancestry (albeit -full disclosure- with plenty of Unionist ancestry), and I only wish my fellow southrons would stop emberassing themselves, and the south in general, by hanging on so depserately to Lost Cause-isms. The show about Bryan Grimes, in particular, encapsulates fairly well all that annoys me about the South's ever so convenient memory concerning the war, the men involved, and it's aftermath. Knowing the full, sordid story, then juxtaposing that against what you here from, let's say, "certain concerned parties" in that particular part of the south is more than frustrating. To reiterate: great podcast involving deeper study of the Civil War. Highly recommended.

Danny_TrappedinsidethebeltwayArrogant and Condescendinglooking down his nose at the unwashed that surround him in gooberville, imagine declaring a State Holiday for Good Friday and not close for the month of Ramadan. He has the perfect professor voice, smug and all knowing, too bad most of the guests seem normal but I can't figure out a way of listening to them without listening to Gerry P.
-
sirdebohunBlatant BiasHeavily slanted towards the Union perspective, with little or no defense offered for the C.S.A. I have yet to find a decent dialogue that presents a topic from the souther perspective. I am fairly neutral in my views, as I am in graduate school for a degree in history; but, despite this fact, I still enjoy hearing from both sides of the aisle. The host also seems to be somewhat of a Lincoln worshiper. That is my opinion, and I could be wrong, but it seems as if Lincoln could do no wrong, and was a perfect man.

RuralfarmboyA-1 showVery Well Done. Such a WIDE variety of topics. For as long as this subject has been studied there is just Soooo much more that can be looked into, from each individual Regimental History--each of which is chock FULL of MANY fasinating stories--to each individual military commander (of Corps,Divisions,Brigades, etc.),THIS is a show that can go on & on for Quite some time more. Must say,not every episode is for everyone, each of us may have our individual interests in the Civil War but, Gerry, you do a Great job. As a host, & interjecting what goes on with you & the happenings in your life,i like it. It's kind of like getting to know you as you do the show. so in a sense,we,as listeners, are kind of making a one sided friendship (not ever having met you in person) & getting to get together once a week, hang out & taking all things CW. Lookin' foreward to each Next Show See You on the Civil War Talk Radio...
