Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

57

Montgomery’s literary classic recounts the exciting adventures undertaken by the fiery eleven-year-old Anne Shirley, an orphan girl accidentally adopted by middle aged siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. A coming-of-age novel, Anne of Green Gables focuses on Anne’s new life at Green Gables farm in Avonlea and her adjustment into the Prince Edward Island community. The story launches when the aging siblings Matthew and Marilla decide that they could use an extra hand around their farm, and believe that adopting an orphan boy would be an appropriate solution. However, due to a misunderstanding, the orphanage sends Anne Shirley instead. As Matthew heads to the train station to pick up the anticipated boy, he is shocked to be greeted by a red-headed, freckled and quite talkative little girl. Oblivious to the fact that a mistake has been made, Anne cheerfully enjoys the ride to her new home not hiding her enthusiasm whatsoever. Although initially spinster Marilla requires a bit of persuasion, both siblings are drawn in by the irresistible charms of the young chatty girl and accept the orphanage’s mix-up. Undeniably Anne adds the much needed color in the lives of Matthew and Marilla who are quiet and timid, while Anne serves as a complete opposite to the two. As Anne adjusts to her new surroundings, she leaves readers absorbed as she makes social gaffes in her clumsy attempts to soak in the social norms, religion, and morals with which her peers are already long accustomed to. Obstructed by countless mischief and creative excursions, Anne must make a distinction between reality and imagination as she walks along the path of self-expression. A timeless favorite, Anne of Green Gables leaves a mark on all that have come across the bright and imaginative character portrayed by Anne. It is nevertheless a little girl’s imagination, romanticism, free-spirit and playful antics that have presented Montgomery’s novel with a special place in the world of literature. Love this book!
I loved Anne’s voice!! The other voices just didn’t match up with the characters. Aunt Josephine’s voice was too young and Diana’s voice was too old.

Voice actor of Diana Is terrible choice
Sounds like a man pretending to be a little girl. Really too bad... made listening to it difficult. the other voice actors do a great job. Shame on whoever allowed it to be ruined by a male playing the voice of one of the main female characters!

A thank you to the people reading this book
Well orchestrated. After listening to the book a while it appears the volunteers are calling in their parts on a recorded line. The voice for Diana may have been read by an older person, possibly from the UK or a place colonized by the UK. The person reading this role called it in on a bad phone line connection. It doesn’t matter if the person is a he or a she or transgender. If these readings are performed by volunteers (for free so that the public so that all will have access) I’m even more appreciative.

    One of my favorites
I have always loved Anne of Green Gables. I really enjoyed the addition of unique voices for each character with this narration. I did find a few of the voices did not jive with my brain’s version of what a character would sound like, Diana was one of those that just did NOT work for me. Fortunately the main narrator did a splendid job.

    So sad
I was enjoying this podcast so much until the voice of Diana Barry arrived. I can not listen to another minute, such a horrible voice for the part of a young girl, it sounds more like a man pretending to be an old woman. Diana is a central character this inappropriate voice makes it impossible to listen any further.

    Good but funny voices
The story was really good but some of the voices were weird. Diana sounded 80 years old and Gilbert Blythe just sounded stupid!

    Great...except Diana
This is great, except Diana's voice is way too old! She sounds older than Marilla & Rachel Linde.

    Diana
What is that voice?! Gilbert is a little off, too. Like someone is trying to do Jonathan Crombie.

Why is Diana 90 and British?
The character voices were lovely...except Diana. She sounds much too old for such a young character! It ruined it for me.

Great Cast & Colorful Character voices!
My daughter and I just finished listening to this and just adore it! The voices have so much character and can just imagine as if they are the voices out of the book!
