The Analytics Power Hour

147
Marketing #64

Attend any conference for any topic and you will hear people saying after that the best and most informative discussions happened in the bar after the show. Read any business magazine and you will find an article saying something along the lines of "Business Analytics is the hottest job category out there, and there is a significant lack of people, process and best practice." In this case the conference was eMetrics, the bar was….multiple, and the attendees were Michael Helbling, Tim Wilson and Jim Cain (Co-Host Emeritus). After a few pints and a few hours of discussion about the cutting edge of digital analytics, they realized they might have something to contribute back to the community. This podcast is one of those contributions. Each episode is a closed topic and an open forum - the goal is for listeners to enjoy listening to Michael, Tim, and Moe share their thoughts and experiences and hopefully take away something to try at work the next day. We hope you enjoy listening to the Digital Analytics Power Hour.

    A Beacon for Data Analysts
I stumbled upon this podcast during a particularly challenging project, and it’s been a game-changer. The insights shared by the hosts and guests are not just informative but also incredibly inspiring. As a data analyst, the journey can sometimes feel solitary, but this podcast has created a vibrant community where I feel connected and supported. One thing that isn’t talked about enough in analytics is how much courage it takes to be fearless in not knowing the answer, solving problems in new ways, or learning your 80 millionth reporting tool or programming language. Bravo to this team for being real and courageous enough to talk about this. The hosts have a knack for breaking down complex topics and adding a dash of humor, making them even more relatable and engaging. Pro tip: don’t skip the show notes! They’re absolute gold, packed with links and transcripts that enhance the listening experience. It’s more than just a podcast; it’s a beacon for anyone in the data analysis field seeking knowledge, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. Highly recommended!

    I Really Appreciate this Podcast.
I’m a beginner data analyst and I find this podcast so illuminating— not to mention fun. Thanks so much to hosts for what you do; I hope to use the knowledge absorbed here to support the survival of live-music, the arts, and the environment.

    Great Podcast
This is the best Analystics podcast I've come across. It's a well produced show, with great content. The hosts have the best banter which makes the show a delight to listen to. I've learned so much, technical, professional, and personal. Every epsiode is worth going back through and listening to.

A *MUST* listen for analytics leaders & practitioners
The APH Podcast has been such a joy to listen to. I found out about it a few months back and ripped through nearly all old episodes while keeping up. The content ranges across technical, soft-skill, career growth, team leadership & domain specific topics. The in-depth discussions are almost as enjoyable as the banter amongst the hosts. I recommend a listen to all my analytics peers & friends.

    Such a timely podcast
There are few things in life that compare to the feeling of waking up on a Tuesday morning knowing my life is going to change because APH has posted a new episode. The content is always full of actionable insights, mental pie charts, and dual axis line graphs that take my game to the next level. Thanks for continuing to carry much of the cognitive load Michael! Without you on this show…I don’t even want to think about it.

Great podcast for Analytics professionals, and entertaining too!
This is one of my “must listen” podcasts. The hosts cover both detailed, informative analytics concepts AND more strategic, thought provoking ideas, with humor and a few choice words to boot. A winner!

    My go-to
One of the best analytics podcasts out there. If not THEE best. Especially if you’re early in your knowledge journey; great listen to get newcomers up to speed.

    Refreshing = f(Approachable Insightful) = This Podcast
Recently discovered this podcast after my usuals were becoming increasingly tiresome and I am SO glad I did! Insightful and humorous discussions encompassing a range of diverse, yet relevant topics. I would highly recommend this podcast for anyone seeking a balanced take on data analytics and real world applications.

    Best podcast out there
I LOVE this podcast! I always listen immediately when it comes out. Great hosts, great guests, and great topics. I always learn something new! And, I always sound super smart at work when I mention something I learned on the show :). I’ve gotten my manager and a few other coworkers to listen to.

    Informative, Entertaining but Vulgar
I’ve improved my analytics knowledge listening to show and I’ve been entertained. But I just wish the language was PG so I could listen in the yard or when driving to errands without offending the neighbors.

When I grow up, I wanna be just like y’all. Lol
I am a data analyst by day and I gotta say, these guys make me feel like an amateur at times. Lol so smart, providing insights that well, others just don’t. I like keeping ahead on the “technology” curb and this is the best way to have a peek inside their approach as well as The Who’s-who of the business analytics world. Keep up the great work and love the re-branding! -jimmy.

    Best Analytics Podcast
I absolutely love this podcast. I saw Tim speak years ago and was thrilled that he had a podcast too. They talk about the hard parts of the job and don’t pretend like they know it all (pet peeve). Oh and they’re also absolutely hilarious and seem like genuinely nice people. ❤️
  • LJsmom90024
    So relatable!
Just listened to the reporting vs analytics episode and I am in love! I thought my co worker and I were crazy when we spend so much time trying to convey the difference. Everything said was so relatable it made me feel like I’m not crazy; Other analysts think the same! Can’t wait to listen to more, sad I’m just no finding it!

    Easily one of the best
For serious, DAPH is easily one of the best professional-ish podcasts. Their Last Call knowledge sharing is full of nuggets that are relevant and thought provoking. Together, Michael, Tim, Moe, and the occasional guest rock, flag, and analyze.

Plays well in the shower, or on dog walks
I've recently entered the realm of digital analytics as a youngster in the game. This podcast really lays down a solid foundation of many analytical concepts and applications in a very palatable manner. I am as big a fan of DAPH, as I am to the LotR "The Prancing Pony" podcast. P.S. totally got suckered into this review by the free sticker promo haha. It's all love, regardless!

    Dropping knowledge bombs
Michael, Tim, Moe and their wide variety of knowledgeable guests are truly rockstars! They drop quality (and free!) knowledge bombs in each and every episode. The great advice they provide, combined with the relatable way in which they deliver it had me hooked from the very first listen. Thanks for putting out such a stellar show Michael, Tim & Moe - keep up the great work!

    Literally Couldn't Stop Listening
Upon discovery of this podcast, I did the usual thing & listened to the most recent episode...it was so engaging, that I literally binge listened to every episode over the period of about three days! For me, each episode was acutely relatable (as someone who struggled to get Analytics properly recognized at billon dollar company) and truly hit their mark of delivering something I could immediately take to work. Keep up the good work!

It's like the Maury Povich of Digital Analytics...
I don't know of any better resource for learning the in's and out's of the digital analytics. The topics are always practical, the guests are always very knowledgeable, and the hosts are entertaining. It's like I always say, "if you only have one hour, watch Maury Povich, but if you have 2 hours, listen to the DAPH."
  • CourtneyyAmandaa
The Best Podcast in the Industry
Love this podcast! Every episode is different and they always feature great guests (but the hosts are pretty awesome too!!). Besides just being genuinely entertaining, the DAPH podcast has taught me a lot, and keeps me up to date on what’s new/important in digital analytics. Keep up the awesome work!

    Essential for web analysts
Extremely useful podcast for the professional web analysts and digital marketing managers. Top industry speakers, important topics and sense of humor! Also big Measure slack community. I like this podcast very much! It’s become like weekly digital analytics homework!

This and Frosted Flakes - They're Grrrreat!
Long time listener. First time rater. I guess they just wore me down with their requests to go to the iTunes store and give them a rating. Props to Michael and Tim for keepin' it explicit for all these years. Welcome to Moe (great addition to the team). But seriously... This podcast is a great service to the industry. It's extremely helpful to hear viewpoints from all corners of the analytics world. The breadth of topics is appreciated as is the depth of coverage from the various expert guests. Nice job! (or: "Good on ya!" for those who don't speak 'merican).

    Rock, Flag and Awesome Podcasts!
As a digital analyst I recommend the DAPH to anyone interested in improving their knowledge and skills in digital analytics, visualization and even the human psychology behind user experience. Their guests are some of the best minds in the digital space and the hosts are "top shelf" analysts in their own rights as well. Please keep these fantastic podcasts going!

One Of The Five Must Have Marketing Podcasts in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Four years running! Yeah! Marketing has changed so much in the last 10 years. We are a socially connected, customer-centric, ultra high demand world. Marketers have to up their game, and it means learning fast, cutting through BS, and focusing on value. These guys get it. The show is engaging, profane (in a great way), smart, insightful, and on the leading edge of marketing today. Michael, Tim, and Jim are natural teachers and guides through the organized chaos. If you're a number cruncher, measure geek, or Google or Adobe Analytics samurai, this is your show.

    DAPH is Teh Awesome
DAPH is hosted by three of the awesomest people in the industry, and there are a lot of really awesome people in this business. The hosts deliver serious value without taking themselves too seriously, which makes the show both enlightening and enlivening. The topics are always useful, and range from strategic to tactical, from bleeding edge innovation to daily grind pragmatism. It’s great variety, yet always on target. This is a must-listen for the digital marketing professional, or anybody who want a glimpse into what is us analytics geeks do and why we are so doggone cool!
  • Thejooper
    Best podcast in the industry!
With pretty much every episode, I find myself learning something new, thinking about an old problem in a new way, or otherwise feeling enlightened. Everyone int he industry should be listening.
  • Jim Sterne
    I'm hooked
You know a podcast is good when you go back and listen to all of them from the beginning. These people are so well informed that they are able to ask really good questions of people who really know what they're talking about. The best reason for going to a conference is to participate in conversations like these. If you can't go, you can listen to the Digital Analytics Power Hour and get a feeling for what it's like, and absorb the insights generated in each show. Great work!

If you’re in digital analytics, this is a must listen
    1. All of the co-hosts of the DAPH are funny, extremely knowledgeable, and bring a great amount of energy to a subject and field that so often lack it. 2. If you don’t walk away (or run or crawl) from an episode having learned at LEAST one thing, then you weren’t paying attention. Every episode I’ve got something new to take back to our team and discuss, it something for me to improve on personally. 3. This truly is one of a handful of can’t miss podcasts for anyone in the digital analytics space OR for marketers that don’t know much about analytics. Give it a listen. You’ll be better for it.
  • I don't like these people.
Still the best analytics podcast out there
I binge listened to these guys when I found it and I'd say over a year later still love it. They are hilarious and I always find something of value from them. Welcome to the show Mo!

    So helpful for lone analysts
Are you a lone anlayst looking to learn how other pros might address some of the everyday questions and issues you encounter? Did you have a rough day down in the data mine, and to top it off, no one laughed at your analytics joke at the team meeting today? Lone analyst, feel alone no longer! This podcast offers a great balance of industry knowledge and humor on the struggles we face in analytics. The podcast feels like a casual bar conversation and is helpful for maintaining an open mind to evolve process, product use, and communication practices.
  • MSilb7
    Great Conversations!
I needed to hear some analytics conversations, because I'm currently approaching this space on my own. These guys are great and explaining topics and pointing people in directions to great resources!
  • Abjlacroix
    Entertaining and informative
I listen to a few nerdy analytics/data podcasts, and this is probably my favorite one. The hosts are charismatic and fun to listen to, the topics go deep instead of broad, and they touch a wide variety of topics, both conceptual and practical. Some on career advice, some on applications of personalization - there's lots to learn here about digital analytics.
  • QueFuego
Phenomenal with a helping of ridiculous
So psyched to have stumbled across this podcast. Mike, Jim and Tim are deeply versed in the industry, and they strike a great balance between analytics-heavy discussion around measurement products and industry trends, while also injecting the business understanding that I find missing from much of the analytics space yet is so essential. Plus, they’re frickin’ hilarious. Like if eMetrics has a standup event, I’d say we just get these guys drunk and put them on the mic. Can’t endorse this podcast enough - I especially dug the testing episode. I’ve been recommending this podcast to everyone I know in the digital measurement space, and you should too! Keep up the good work gents, you’re developing a great resource for the community! - Ryan

    Can't get enough
About to be a recent (female) college grad entering the field of analytics. While I have been fortunate to have some formal training at my university, this podcast as given me a connection to the industry that is hard to find anywhere else! Highly recommend.
  • Jgianoglio
    Entertaining and insightful
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite podcasts. It gives a great sense of the overall landscape of the analytics world, offers a few good tips each episode, and provides much food for thought. Rock, Flag and Eagle!
  • Jaycohh
    Seriously awesome.
Although I already find digital analytics fun and interesting these guys keep it fresh and entertaining, while still being extremely informative. I graduated in June of 2014 from US college, since then I’ve worked in digital analytics for just under a year and I can confidently say that I’ve learned SO MUCH from listening to about 8 episodes now. The way I think about analytics, problems, and my career has changed significantly because of these podcasts. 5/5. Will listen again. Keep up the good work.
  • nduley
Lots of power in this hour
I love this new analytics podcast! They cover topics relevant to my work as a web analytics manager at a non-profit. Not only are technical aspects and tools discussed, there is great advice on how to work with internal customers. Who knew former bartenders make great analysts?!
  • Lea Pica
    Honest and refreshing.
It's fun to hear the guys duke it out over important analytics topics like "key KPI indicators", how many pages a dashboard should have, what makes a great analyst and the evil of pie charts. Really valuable ideas for the digital analytics practitioner, wrapped up in friendly and entertaining banter!
