Dragnet

134

Dragnet was created and produced by Jack Webb, who starred as the terse Sgt. Friday. Webb had starred in a few mostly short-lived radio programs, but Dragnet would make him one of the major media personalities of his era.Webb was a stickler for accurate details, and Dragnet used many authentic touches, such as the LAPD's actual radio call sign (KMA-367), and the names of many real department officials, such as Ray Pinker and Lee Jones of the crime lab or Chief of Detectives Thad Brown. Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in American media history. The series gave millions of Americans a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real-life police work. Dragnet earned praise for improving the public opinion of police officers. Actor and producer Jack Webbâs aims in Dragnet were for realism and unpretentious acting. He achieved both goals, and Dragnet remains a key influence on subsequent police dramas in many media. The shows cultural impact is demonstrated by the fact that even after five decades, elements of Dragnet are known to those who've never seen or heard the program.

Is it possible to clean up the sound?
I love listening to the shows, but the sound is very muffled as well as having a squeak in it. It sounds like the master tapes are damaged. Are you able to clean it up any better?

    Wrong Show
The title shows Dragnet, but the podcast is for Father Knows Best. I’ve enjoyed your podcast, but something is wrong.

    Wrong show
Was an episode of Father Knows Best...and a really inane one at that.

    Unfitting and dumb suspense music
Love these stories but the added suspense music on some of the stories is dumb. It’s not in the original stories and it’s like modern clear suspense music added onto the old and sorta fuzzy original radio broadcasts. It’s very annoying cuz it doesn’t at all fit and messes up the feel of the stories

    Love Drag Net
I'm so glad I've found this podcast. I've been listening to drag net for years on the big broadcast Sunday nights, but now that I've found this I don't have to wait a week for a new episode. This surely makes work more bearable!

Exhausting ad for selling products - too much
By far this is the best podcast for Dragnet. But the relentless ad to sell product at the beginning of podcast is unbearable. I know you want to cell stuff Humphrey Camardella Production but do you really have to go on & on about it for 4 minutes? I am giving 1 start just for that reason. Please cut that out.

    Any Podcast from Humphrey Camardella
At first their Podcasts were great. Now, IF you get a new one, the first 4 or 5 minutes are them begging for contributions and then in the middle of the Podcast they throw in another minute or so asking for more. The quality is far below par now, it's like they no longer care about the listeners. Sometimes you get a whole contribution request instead of a Podcast. ("Brother Can You Spare a Dime" was and is pathetic.) Don't waste your time on their Podcasts.

    Dragnet!!!
I really love this podcast. It cheers me up and more than anything it gets me in a suspenseful mood. It is fun and entertaining listening to these. They do not take up a lot of memory and are all 30 min. long. Great for kids and adults. The only problem is that they have stopped coming, I would love for them to start up again. It is an absolute "bear necessity" for all radio lovers!

    Still the best
The title says it all. Webb produced and stared in the best cop drama of all time, period.

Dragnet Guest stars - Harry Morgan and more
Harry Morgan may not be Joe's sidekick but did you catch him on some of the early episodes? Part of the fun of listening to these old radio shows is listening for voices of other stars. Harry Morgan, William Conrad and Raymond Burr are just a few of the many guest stars you can listen to on the Dragnet radio episodes.

    Loves it!
I grew up watching Dragnet reruns and was so thrilled to find this podcast. I especially love listening to "Fatima cigarettes, best of all long cigarettes" commercials. It's historical and entertaining. Keep them coming please!

    Excellent
It's great to hear these old shows. My only complaint is that I wish they'd edit down the commercials. It's interesting hearing the ad for Fatima Cigarettes once per episode but by the third time the novelty has worn off.

What happened to this great podcast?
This was one of all-time favorites, and like the other reviewer, I eagerly awaited new shows. However, this feed has been inactive since Sept 30, 2007? Has Humphrey-Camardella Productions decided not to continue this excellent show? I hope that they reconsider and add new content soon.

    More frequent updates?
For a while, this podcast was a personal favorite. The episodes were delivered on a timely basis and the recordings were pretty clean transfers. Dragnet is one of my favorite police procedurals, so I was thrilled to get to hear it again, presented in a no-nonsense manner. There hasn't been a new episode of the podcast released since September, though. Are there plans to continue running this show, or has Humphrey Camardella Productions decided to let this one go? I'm going to keep the feed for a while longer, but if there isn't an update soon, I'll have to find a new resource for getting this classic.

    Classic, classic radio police procedural!
This is great radio. Jack Webb is at his business-like best, the cases are gritty and the production values are excellent. The only downside is the phoney accent of the "non-Harry Morgan" sidekick. That's irritating, but the show is strong enough to be well worth listening to anyway--highly recommended.
